Having just read:

Motorcycle diaries (which wasn't so much about motorcycles)

Mondo Enduro (Very good)

LWR (found at a charity shop for 25p) (so so)

LWD (given to me as a gift last year) (so so)

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Jupiters Travels...... (good so far)

Anybody else care to recommend me some books to add to my collection and for my amusement ? are Ted Simon's sequels and midquals as good?.

Adventure Motorcycling Handbook (Trailblazer) by Chris Scott is already on its way, though this is more a technical book than anything else.

There are some others recommended by Amazon by Lois Pryce and Geoff Hill "Running with the Moon" Jonny Bealby , any others I've missed on that list?...

I'm don't particularly care for the how to ride the perfect line type books or road craft books etc.

Sure sure I'm dreaming of it currently but intend to put pen to BCF for a big trip mid 2009.

Any thoughts?

https://www.nicksanders.com/publications.htm

Havn't read any of the books, I have the Parallel world one, along with the DVD's, and from a quick flick view of the book, it looks good + lots of pictures.

DVD seems pretty good also Thumbs Up

Mum and Dad recommendations:

Into Africa by Sam Manicom (ISBN: 978-0-9556573-1-3); he also does 'Under Asian Skies'

Mum thinks there better than Lois Pryce, although she said she enjoyed them too.

I enjoyed 'Lois on the Loose' by Lois Pryce.

It's nothing ground breaking, if you've read stuff like 'Jupiter', but it's well written and good tale.

Slightly off-topic but I've just started reading Charley Boorman's By Any Means. Some of the chapters are about bikes. Seems to be a good read so far, first impressions are that it's less beneficial knowledge-wise than say the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook or Jupiter's Travels. I'll let you know what I think.

Also I would really recommend Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig. Not so much about the particulars or technical details, more about the meaning of it all. It's a bit deep in places, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

I'm about halfway through Return to Jupiter which I'm really enjoying. He's a better writer compared to the first book, and it's interesting to read about the differences he sees in the world throughout his trip.

This one:

It's a good laugh, and somewhat inspiring.

Have you read Zen and the Art of motorcycle maintenance?
An obvious choice, though I haven't been that impressed (haven't finished it yet).

I prefer just reading the threads on advrider.

Cheers just ordered the 3 DVD's and books as it worked out cheaper then just getting the DVD's on there own.
I enjoyed the 'Journey Beyond Reason' DVD. so hopefully the 'Parallel world' one should be good as well, not sure I'll get on with the book as he does like to babble on about stuff Laughing

Hold on I see something wrong here with Lois Pryce:

On the back of Lois on the Loose it says:

She rode her motorcycle from the Northernmost corner of Alaska to the southern most tip of South America....

and yet

https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BWsdPkNxaA4

Shows her riding from a distance, surely her technique for filming isn't dumping a camera somewhere riding up to it and past it ?.

Throughout the book She meets up and rides with a few other people. Prolly one of them that did it.

I was going to start a thread about this. Thanks Itchy.

At tyhe moment, I'm reading Long Way Round. Charity store - don't think I would have bothered with it otherwise, having seen the series.

This is the first travel bike book that I've read, so I can't really compare it to the genre.

It's an enjoyable enough read, and I'm making light work of it. The thing I don't like about it- and the series, though - is that it seems a little too polished, the trip does. After all, most tourers don't have a production team behind them organising things. Tghis isn't critisising the riders, I'm just saying the book isn't very "raw" and if I was touring, I don't think it would have that much relevance to my plans, etc: i.e I couldn;t ask BMW for a bike and spare parts.

I agree, although I think Ted Simon did a similar sort of thing (although to a much lesser scale) with Triumph and The Times way back when he started his first journey in 1973.

Unless it compromised the freedom or meaning of my trip, guess if I could get a free bike to go round the world on I would go for it, seeing as there's no way I'm gonna be able to afford to do it in the next few years.
