I have just lost my wallet on the train home, incase that i don't get it back how long does it take to get a new photo card part from the DVLA? The reason i asking is because i have my car test on the 22nd of january and wondered if it will be with me in time.

If it is not possible to get it by then would using my passport and paper part be allowed for me to gain my license? I really don't want to have to re-book it as been waiting ages for this.

Cheers eddyh

What documents do I need to take to the practical test?

You will need to take both your photo card licence and paper counterpart to the test centre.

If you have an old-style paper licence, from 1 November 2005, you will also need to take a valid passport.

If applicable, it is also advisable to take the following to the test centre:

* your theory test certificate
* your CBT certificate

If you do not have the correct documents you will not be allowed to take the test.

https://www.dsa.gov.uk/FAQ.asp?id=12760&cat=31

That mentions CBT but will be the same for a car test I imagine. No idea how long to get a new licence though. They mention allowing up to 3 weeks for a licence to arrive.

Tick the box that lets them verify your identity with your passport photo, and you should be fine. Last time mine needed changing, it was back within a week.

The counterpart displays all the information that the photocard does (bar the photo) so i can't see why they won't accept a passport (i guess they would request it be a valid passport) as a form of photographic ID.

Just ring the test centre on monday and ask them, surely they can't force you to rebook just because you don't have your photocard when a passport would be sufficient. What would you do if you had passed your bike test, send your license off and then had your driving test booked for say 2 weeks later?

Saying that, everytime i have had to send my license off (change of address and passing my bike test) i have had it back in roughly 7 working days. I even got my provisional through in less than 10 working days and i applied for that when i was 15 (so i wasn't in any rush)

Phone the DVLA and you can order a new one by phone. Didn't take long last time I did it whne I was mugged.

Quote:
Photocard driving licence holder

Apply by phone

You can apply by phone if one or both parts of your photocard licence have been lost or stolen and none of your details have changed. DVLA accepts the following credit or debit cards - MasterCard, Visa, Eurocard or Maestro. The fee is £17.50. The telephone number is 0870 240 0009, Monday to Friday 8.00 am - 8.30 pm or Saturday 8.00 am - 5.30 pm.

You won’t be able to apply by phone if you’re a paper licence holder or if your photo is due to expire or has expired.

Apply by post

You’ll need to:

* complete the D1 ‘application for a driving licence’, available from the DVLA form ordering service or Post Office® branches
* include the part of your licence you have if only one part is missing
* send your completed application and fee to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AB

You’ll also need to provide original documents to confirm your new name if it’s changed since your last licence was issued.

I'd suggest you ask and check how long it'll take. They will probably say up to 28 days.

Safer to re-schedule your test. Thumbs Up

My license and NI card stays with in my wallet, and my wallet goes with me when ever i go out of the house (unless i'm just going to the garage/garden obviously)

I don't really need my NI card but i just keep it in there so it doesn't get misplaced. And for some people like me, the license is needed on a day to day basis. I even still get ID'd to buy fags sometimes, although most of the shops in my area know who i am and know i am old enough to buy them.

But you never know when you will need it, especially if you are driving/riding. May even need it in a bank as ID and you might have to go to the bank unexpected. I don't know anyone that doesn't carry their license with them (Apart from chives on here, but he is a weirdo from lancashire Laughing ).
