Hey guys, due to coming into a bit of money i'd like to get my first big bike...(once i've passed the test)

Now... i know what you're thinking.. he's been riding a 125 he can't ride a big bike properly... but i've been in Florida riding my dads R1 around for the past month, and it's been fine, absolutely gorgeous bike to ride, everything is so refined, not had a single issue with braking or power or cornering etc...

So... i'll budget 4k for a bike and i'll pay insurance seperately, but what bike? i don't think i need a 1000cc yet.. i don't really want one yet, i'd like to work my way up.

Any ideas? i love fully faired bikes, it will be used for commuting but i can deal with the riding position, i've spent 4 hours on an R1 without much issue in one go.

I may get a cheapo car for the winter months but for now it'll be bike only, i've ridden in crap weather and know to be cautious.

any input greatly appreciated.

Aaron

Are you going to be restricted to 33bhp? If not I reckon any of the sports 600s are a good bet. You will need self discipline but they are easy to ride safely as you have to rev the tits off them before they go anywhere so they won't bite you unless you're pushing it.

If you are going to be restricted then the general consensus is that inline 4 600 sports bikes aren't the best bet though I've never ridden a restricted one. SV650 maybe? Every c*nts got one but that's probably because they're good for the job Wink I wouldn't bother spending £4000 on your first big bike though as you'll either drop it or want to change it very soon anyway. Spending £1500-2000 will get you a nice bike which you will probably learn more on as you won't worry so much about ruining it, then you can save the rest and get a nicer bike when you have more experience and a better idea of exactly what bike you want Smile

hey thanks for the reply, no i won't be restricted as i turned 21 last week. must do my test asap!

I was thinking of going small, i've still got this brand new YBR125 with only 3000miles on so that should part exchange for 1000 hopefully, anything is better than nothing.

I honestly don't know what i'd like, i enjoy the look of speed triple R's but i want a sporty ride position, purely because it feels nice and my god looks good lol.

As i say, i've been pooteling around on this R1 for a month, apart from kangaroo'ing once or twice due to not concentrating on my right hand position i've had no problems at all, i wouldn't want this much power but brakes and handeling would be superb.

What could i get for 2grand? i'm looking over biketrader, basically got CBR600, Kawa zx6, R6 or GSXR600, i would be happy with any of those to be honest with you, the R6 would be the quickest, but what about handeling and braking?

Never ridden an R6 but it's probably the most competent for going fast Very Happy They're all good, just pick whichever one you like the look of or even try and ride some though that may be tricky as a newly qaulified rider. Whichever you pick just respect it until you've got used to it as it will be a huge jump in power. Getting on a track day is probably a good idea, I did my first car track day a week after passing my test and my car control improved drastically after a couple of spins finding the limits.

You have an old'ish CBR, what mileage is that on? how are older, higher mileage bikes? ideally i'd like something 2000 and onwards, i just want something that's refined, like the R1, braking is astonishing, handeling is... well... perfect! i'd had my arse off the seat on it and it felt superb, no twitchiness, no slide, no worry at all about either tyre losing traction.

Any of them will feel superbly planted compared to your 125 Thumbs Up

My CBR's on 33,000 miles or so and is cosmetically perfect and doesn't have any mechanical problems though it could do with a service. You could probably get one like mine for a grand at this time of year so for your £2000 budget you could get a very nice bike. I looked at a '93 CBR600 over the summer that only had 11,000 miles on it and was COMPLETELY mint. The dealer led me on a 30 odd mile test ride down some very twisty roads at 3 figure speeds so it got a good test and it felt like riding a new bike. He only wanted £1600 for that one in the height of summer so if you went private sale at this time of year you could get something much newer in similar condition Wink

It's around Florida, and it's boring lol, straight roads 99% of the time, never need to get out of 1st gear... did do 115mph in 3rd as i got bored of slow going, but that was on my "private" runway.. honest.

Thinking i may go for a new bike, not sure yet, not sure if it's worth it, spend 6k on a new bike or 4k on an older bike.

Shocked

If your serious about getting any of those bikes you mentioned, then you need to get you licence and see what your insurance is going to be. If you have plenty of cash then it wont be a problme but for a 4k bike you really wnat fully comp insurance and it might be pretty steep with no years under your belt on a full licence and limited NCB. I think when I was 21/22 a CBR6 was about 600 TPFT.

Then you need to go out and have a sit on bikes if you can, have a look at them and if you find a trader who will let you have a ride. The sports sixes are pretty even so its down to which you think suits you best (and which you think is the better quality if it bothers you).

Or you could just take the word of someone whos never ridden one and just get the R6! Laughing

Like Villers said your vice is going to be insurance, as you'll be a newly qualified rider. The sports 600s may well be perfectly suitable for you, but the insurance is more than likely going to sting.

There's a lot of brilliant bikes out there for your price range, and because you'll be spending that much the dealers will be interested. Have a sit on some bikes and see what you like. When you find one you like, see if you can take it for a test ride. Follow your heart, you followed it to get into bikes in the first place, right? Wink

money isn't an issue, i'll get the first years insurance paid in full straight away. (sorry if i sound like a snotty c&&t but my stepmum is dying and has left me a bit).

I'm tempted by a daytona, purely because it's a daytona, gorgeous, sleek, british, and oozes quality. on the road ill never get to push anything too far, i'll do trackdays when i can but an R6 is born to be abused and it's just not really possible on roads.

Can anyone give me any recommendations on their own personal experience on these bikes? and why i should choose one over the other?

Im sorry to hear that bud. Im a big fan of 'If you want to do it, do it' if you have the money to burn then fair enough get on with it as long as it make you happy.

From personal experience, Ive had the CBR6 and an 06 ZX6R 636. The CBR was as hard as nails, good fun, predictable and comfy. The 636 was bonkers at times, very skittish (liked to shake its head now and then), track focused (especially compared to the more relaxed CBR), fast, great handling and very uncomfortable for me.

In the class your looking at there isnt really that much in it and Im sure you can pick up any sportsbike mag any month for a ZX6R vs GSXR vs R6 etc. They love it Wink

The 675 has got a riding position like the R6's 'born to be abused', just the engine isn't quite as lively (or aurally pleasing).
Don't think that having ridden an R1 for a while and 'been ok' that you will be fine riding another biggish sports bike at a reasonable pace; it might be that fifth hour that gets you, so make sure you build up slowly Thumbs Up.

In reality, I think all the modern 600s are close enough that you can probably get which ever one you think is prettiest and be pretty much as happy with the riding as any other.

Same with slightly older £2k bikes; 99-02 R6 vs same ZX6 only have a little bit between them, though of that year the R6 was a bit more focused; but it only really starts to tell if you're at a decent pace on a trackday (and then you might as well be getting upgraded suspension etc, which will even it out). 03+ and they're all even more similar.

Thanks for the help guys,

Whatever bike i get it will be respected, i know that a quick twitch of the right hand and it's all gone wrong, riding the R1 has actually helped my riding a hell of a lot.

I'm still very much undecided, i'll have to go to a showroom and see what i can have a play with, although i have always liked CBR's.

Appreciate the help guys.

Sorry, at what point did I suggest getting the R6? And do you think I'm wrong in assuming that of the late 90's 600s the R6 is considered the most focused? I don't think I'm really pushing the boat out with that one Laughing I appologise however if you've NEVER aired an opinion about a bike you haven't ridden Rolling Eyes In fact you seem to have just criticised my advice and then just reiterated it by pointing out that they are all competent so just pick whichever you like Thinking

Your telling someone with little experience that the R6 is 'probably the most competent', from no experience of your own. It may well be, it may not but either way its a stab in the dark from an opinion.

I merely suggested that he try the bikes to see hwich one he fancies, not narrow it down to the one choice on the simple premise that it is the quickest. Sorry if that gives you the hump but what the guy needs is a balanced view, especially since he's a new rider and the quickest may not be the most suitable bike for the job Wink

He asked about handling and braking and which was the fastest out of a group of 4 bikes which are constantly compared on threads on here with nearly always the same conclusion, that the R6 is the quickest. I've ridden 3 of the 4, didn't feel entirely unjustified in voicing the consensus of opinion to be honest, especially as I pointed out I hadn't ridden that one and that it was thus PROBABLY the quickest Rolling Eyes And once again, you are giving the same advice I did so get of my back Laughing

If that last part is true, then don't be too cocky when you jump on your first big bike. Any monkey can ride an R1 around straight roads and keep it in first...

Although why you'd keep it in first is beyond me...

Did you get any spirited corner included riding done at all on the R1?

i have indeed, handle like it's on rails, taught me to actually look where you want to go, may sound easy but on my 125 i was worried about road surface and all kinds(skinny shit tyres too remember) and this was beautiful.

Now, i'm tempted to get a new bike, no MOT for 3 years and tax is done when you buy it, money is now not an issue at all(again not trying to sound snobby), would it be wiser to go for a year old couple thousand mile bike or brand new from the dealer? I'm leaning towards an R6, but i'm open to anything, once i get my test done i'll go have a play and see what i like but i'd love some proper opinionated inputs.

Cheers

You say you've got money now; will you still have just as much money to happily spend in a year or two's time?
If you do and will be happy to splash out again, consider new or better nearly new, otherwise I'd go cheaper for the first one; you can always get a newer/better version of the same bike if you decide you like it, or can move up/down/sideways if you decide there's one aspect you'd like more or less of in your riding.

First of all hi ace and sorry to hear that about your step mum. one thing i need to ask you why you're looking for a second hand when money are not a problem? If i were you i would go for gsxr 750 or the new 600 blade but not a 1000. I have a 600 and all of my friends tell me that's the best choice, they are all with 1000 and 1300 (hayabusas) and it's true cause when we're driving (erm..... a little bit fast) corners are not a problem to keep up with them, and i have a hornet 600 '99!. really can't see the point. If you want a 1000 just to say you own one than that's another story. and for what purpose you need it? track days?
