I'd say have a play about with the settings. If you want really rich sounds, whack the tone to the max with drive and gain at medium levels. You ought to be getting some sweet sustain at that point - pinched harmonics should be relatively easy.
The cheap amp probably wouldn't help mate to be honest with you. You'd want a good-ish sort of amp; ideally 30W, doesn't matter if it's solid state or valve, but you really do need an Equaliser.
On the amp, for metal, i have treble maxed out, bass about 1/3 to 1/2 way and mid range anything up to 1/2. Have a play about. I normally use bridge pickups with their heights raised so the coils are closer to the strings - again, you get more input. I usually use those EQ settings for punk too; but usually turn down the gain, add more midrange and drop off the high end a little to have a more crunchier sort of tone... ideally, these are just basic settings, you'd need to experiment them for yourself.
Tube screamers are only effective if you have a good amp and good pickups i'm afraid - something like my mate's JCM 2000 TSL stack or my other mate's peavey XXX valve stack. If you've got a puny 5w amp, it won't work as well mate. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

My next door neighbour had an engl screamer, only 50W but man did it shake his room. Funnily enough, i was just looking at youtube videos for ENGL screamers before i posted my last comment!
But for 150 quid, you're probably restricted to solid state. tbh, we caused a whole lot of aggrivation at uni when a few of us had valve amps ... lets just have a jam at 1am with the amps turned to just about vol 4-5? ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Humbucker > Tube Screamer > valve amp = cream to crunch
Humbucker > Boss MT-2 > valve amp = head blown off
You're gonna find it difficult to reach a modern metal tone with a tubescreamer, so have a look around.
If you go for a valve amp then i'm sure you know how loud they are compared to Solid State. Even the tiny terror amp at half power (7watts) is far too loud for any bedroom, i sometimes use an attenuator..that helps..anyways i'm rambling. most important thing isn't pedals its axe n amp n enjoyment.
Pat
Ps oh and my choice of valve amp for your budget would be a Valve Jnr, i picked 1 up changed it's speaker for a Jensen (same amp but different branding is the Harley Benton). Next would be a Blackheart Killer Ant, then save for a nice cabinet. Finally a Tiny Terror. All these come in heads/combos apart from the Killer Ant which incidentally is the most fun you can have with 5 watts ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud
