Now a few people on here have ridden all sorts of bikes from all eras but just wondering what engine from which bike would be your favourite and why? thinking just the engine alone, ignoring other things that make up the bike, such as looks, chassis and handling.

The motor from the RSV mille.

It's a crazy lump and sounds amazing. Very jerky at low revs mind.

i don't actually have a favourite engine, i've had 2strokes which i've enjoyed, in 4stroke motors i've had singles, twins, a triple, inline fours and boxer fours, would like a V twin sometime (large harley)...

the 2strokes were great with ring ding ding noises....

big singles were fun in thier own way, my XT500 was brilliant...

my Triumph twins have obviously been enjoyable and really look good with a lovely sound Mr. Green ....

i loved the pulsing of the XS750 (shame about the gearbox)....

i've had 3 Goldwings (plain janes), all been smooth and reasonably powerful and did exactly as required...

inline 4s from both Honda and Suzuki...

the old Honda 750sohc is a beautiful looking engine and nowhere as unreliable as people made out if maintained correctly....

i've aircooled, oilcooled and water cooled Suzukis, what can i say, i just like them all Mr. Green

I havent really ridden many bikes with 'different' engines. My bike is a 600 IL4. Ive ridden an sv650, BMW F800st, GSXR750, Triumph Thruxton and a Harley Davidson 883 ( Embarassed ) Laughing
Out of those i loved the 750, so much torque and power, and its instant. Smile
But to me there is something souless about an IL4. I really really want to try a Triumph triple, and a big v-twin, and i suspect that when i do my next bike wont an inline 4..

FJ1200 engine was nice. Open the throttle in any gear at any revs and it would accelerate nicely. It was so rare to get above 4,000 rpm that I once rode 30 miles before I realised I had routed the throttle cable incorrectly and the twist grip only turned a quarter of the way round.

Also quite enjoyed a borrowed Suzuki GS850 shaft drive and definitely enjoyed a Buell that tried to pull my arms out of their sockets.

I'm still hankering for a go on the mille and the tuono just to see what the fuss is about.

I 'admired' the engine on my 636 for the precision but it was a noisy thing that I thought would break. My current 1300 suzuki engine is my favourite (maybe a bit biased) as its a pussycat and a tiger whenever you need either. You can mope about at low revs pretty smooth and then without changing gear can just zoom through the revs and then as it gets higher it takes on the sportier exhaust note. That and the fact with a little work it can have bonkers BHP and still maintain a reasonable level of reliability.

Worst engine ever for me had to be the SV650, it purported to have low down grunt when all it had was clatter followed by a very asthmatic ending to an unthrilling ride. It did sound nice though Wink

916 engine. Loved it. Very easy to work on, nice and compact and put out all the torque you need for the road.

I also liked the little 250cc v-twin in my old NSR, that was a good little 2 stroke.

only ridden a hanful of bikes, a V4, IL4 and vtwin from a RVF,FZR and sv650.

heres a newbie view on the 3 types

vtwin - sv650 was the largest but i disliked it the most, was quiet, couldnt really feel anything i just kinda moved where as the other bikes got you really involved in riding them.

V4 -most used to it but is still so much fun, very responsive, no flat spots, sounds awesome and is really thin and is far more comfortable. pain in the ass to work on though.

IL4 - only had the fzr250 for a short while but feel surprising torquey for a 250 (it has exup which might help) and of course the 18,500rpm redline is a lot of fun Very Happy.

Another vote for the Mille.

But I'm talking of the original Mille.

The one I tried did have the power commander and can, but it still a very exhillarating thump.

Loved the way it built through the revs.

I'm currently loving my KTM 200 EXC.

It's basically a bored 125, so is pretty revvy. It makes a bit more midrange range than the 125, but this feels more like a a fatter more intense powerband.

I went for the 200 to be more docile; how wrong I was. Mid-berm, as it gets into the powerband the front'll happily lift. Due to the light weight, low gearing and high centre of gravity, it'll lift the front in fourth off the power in some situations!
It is still quite weak low down, so not only entices you to keep it on the boil, but really rewards when it does.

I reckon it'd be a pretty fun engine for back-road ragging on the road.

Oh and it sound lovely as the rear is skimming across bumpy ground, spinning up as it comes off each slight rise!

I think one of the most enjoyable road rides I had was on my RS250 when it only had 37.5hp; the 200 makes about that, but with an even more revvy delivery.

To be fair, I was underwhelmed by my 2000 Mille's motor ...

Ok it does sound mean/loud with a can, but it felt a bit flat and how the feck does a 1000cc V-Twin - that coming out of the turn has the run on the guy in front - still get 'dropped' like this? (see ~55secs in vid linked below). I don't know what his bike was, but he wasn't even prone!! Sad

Other dude 1 - Mille 0 Thumbs Down

I think my 'fave' engine (to ride) have to be the highly strung 2-strokes ... Thumbs Up ... I find it great fun and really rewarding to try and keep it in its 1RPM wide powerband where it has crazy power!! Cool

Has to be a V4 for me. Love the gear driven cam whine, the engine that feels/sounds it's as high revving and as low thumping as an inline four/v-twin - that noise is just Razz from an open pipe. And a lovely creamy, almost glitch free delivery that seems to rev for ever, with the odd punctuation of a rev limiter.

Kind of like a triple, but for some weird reason, the 1050 Triumphs I've tried don't seem to be as intoxicating.

Inline fours. M'eh. Great engines, awesome deliveries, interesting noises, but just don't do it for me unfortunately. You can't beat the high end, 150bhp+ wooomph of an on song litre sports bike though, not for pure warp speed thrills. Gixers sound the best in this field.

Big singles. The bigger the better.

I don't care if they make crap power, they're soft, the vibrate etc. I just like the feel.

Must get a DR800 one of these days.

You can get 750cc kits for the already seriously-powerful (and 109kg) Hussy 650, though not sure they'd be considered 'soft' or lacking in power, but you'd get the vibrations, at least Very Happy.

I think out of all the bike's i've ridden the best engine's were the Yamaha TY175 and Kawasaki KMX200, both for the sound and the tractable delivery. I do like the smell of burnt 2T oil Laughing

Old air cooled IL4's do however sound so right and what if i were a non motorcylce rider, would be how id say a typical motorcycle should sound. Give me a Kawasaki Z1100R with a Kerker 4-1, and id be loving it!
