Hi,

My Astra SRI 2ltr doesnt seem to like the rain!!

Everytime its damp/raining the car struggles to pull and refuses to go at a decent speed.

There is a warning light on on the dash which ive been informed is the cam sensor that needs replacing. Could this be linked?

The car runs fine in the dry.

Any help appriciated and will hopefully get round to sorting it on Saturday if somone could help diagnosing it!

Thanks,

Adam

Cam position sensor could affect it, but it sounds like the damp is getting into something electrical. Go round the engine bay removing and spraying all the electrical connectors with a water dispersant (WD40 or similar) and then see what its like.

I do this on both our cars and my bikes every few months. Just to keep the damp out.
Thumbs Up

Just spoke to my dad and he recommended starting the car up in the dark and taking a look under the bonnet to see if there is any sparking.

How likely is it i would be able to see??

There is a problem with vauxhals that was on watchdog recently, something to do with fuel pump/sensor failing and kicking in a go slow mode on the car.

Might be worth a look, doesn't mention rain though.

clicky

EDIT: watchdog link

The watchdog problem was only on the 2.2 petrol engines of the Vectra, Zafira and Omiga if i remember right.

It sounds exaclty the same as what my mini would do in the rain. It was water getting in the distributor. I just used some WD40 as mentioned above and it worked a treat. I'd also put some on the spark plugs as well just to be sure.

The SRI wont have a distributor mate, most moved over to electronic ignition in the 90's. Thumbs Up

Water around the HT leads or coils can still be a problem though.

You may or may not be able to see sparking. But as others have said, spray some WD40 around all of the HT side. If it suddenly starts running properly, you've found your problem.

Yes it can, not just with Astras, most cars if the water gets into the wiring can suffer the same fault.

As for starting in the dark, you will see sparks arcing from your HT leads it they are breaking down and WD40 is no good as a permanent(ish) fix due to modern cars having much higher voltages in the ignition system. They will need replacing.

But that also depends on if the astra has a coil pack some modern engines have seperate coils on top of the plug cap.
