Everyone seems to say when you buy your 1st bike you'll
drop it, drop it at home or in the garage ect
Truth or myth ?

dont buy a 1st bike with a fairing because you'll "drop it"

True....

Or just put some bungs and or some crash bars on it so the fairing isn't wrecked...

Myself I do stupid things like put the bike on its side stand forgetting to put the side stand down...

I even watched Ged a rider of 35 years+ experience drop his ST1300 when he put his foot down on wet leaves (so he says).

I also saw a bike cop drop his BMW in Spain after booking us.

Or they get knocked or pushed over by scrotes , once you get more experienced drops become less common but still happen.

False... I've had 4 bikes now and not dropped any of them. That's commuting on them all on a daily basis through winter on snow and ice too!

It all depends on how you ride, I'm careful on corners, roundabouts and take it very easy when I'm worried about the road conditions. However on straights and when filtering I can often go a bit mad, careful but mad! Twisted Evil Most importantly always assume every car is possibly going to cross your path, don't assume you'll be fine...

I've almost dropped them a couple of times through not putting the side stand down properly or putting my foot down on loose gravel, but I'm a big guy and luckily I've been able to hold them up every time.

Thumbs Up

You'll drop it.

Nah seriously, dropping a bike is surprisingly easy, but that doesn't mean you definitely will.

I've dropped bikes (while pushing) twice, once was my 125, pushing it too quickly past a badly parked car on a driveway. Broken clutch lever and dented pride.

Much worse was the gix4, trying to park it close to a wall on wobbly paving slabs, coupled with inexperience holding the bike wrong (straight upright instead of leaning into me like I do now). Dented the lovely Yoshi can and snapped a lever. Was very gutted. Sad

Anyway, people say about fairing cause that's an added potential expense/guttedness with dropping a faired bike.

Oh and when my chain snapped (gix4) not far from my mate's barracks, I'd pushed the bike all the way to the gate and was fucked, so she got one of her lads to take over for me to put it in the mess car park.

Not being bike-savvy, he pushed it all the way while stood to the right-hand side of the bike...so comes to put the stand down...can't get to the stand which is on the left...nngarrgh he dropped my feckin bike! Evil or Very Mad Cracked the tail fairing panel.

Wanted to beat him to death with my snapped chain, but realised that would have been a little ungrateful. Shifty Laughing

Besides, I was too knackered from pushing it myself.

Odds are at somepoint you will drop the the bike, either in the garage or at speed.

You are most likely to do this while you are not used to the bike, or have more confidence than experience.

Personally I've been down more often than a Thai hooker and my friends have been known to keep a pool on when the next 'event' will be.

I think I've dropped every bike I've owned and the 2 bikes taht I've ridden that are sat in my garage.

Though to be fair here are the excuses (Shifty):

My 125 - I didn't give a shit, chinese piece of crap, no fairings and easy to pick up. Laughing

My Hornet 6 - dropped by a girly friend of mine when she sat on it with the stand and then proceeded to lean the opposite of the stand and then fell over. Her and my friend tried picking it up while I just covered my eyes. Then I went over went "ffs" and picked it up. Laughing

NC30 - Parked up at a car pakr while my 2 best friends were on CG125 rentals. Slight bit of hill. Put it on the sidestand, and stood there for a few seconds to make sure it didn't move. Didn't. Turned around, took about 5 steps and it fell over Mad Friend said he saw it falling slowly. But decided not to do anything. The windscreen cracked (and it still is while I'm riding it Laughing) No other damage.

GT250R. Got home. Put it on the stand. Opened garage door, and as I turned round I saw it start to fall over. I rushed to it and jt rescued it (literally like 2cm before it hti the ground). My god did my arms hurt afterwards though!

So yes you can, or someone else can. But by mistake. Shit happens. Yes you are likely to drop it but get a faired bike anyays if you want Razz

I have dropped mine (hornet) in the shed and fell into a wall when wheeling it to the shed

Damage was nowt in the shed, few scrapes on the right hand side when i fell into the wall (just plastic covers, no paintwork fortunately)

Mate dropped his CG when he rode off with the steering lock on (oh how i laughed)
Scuffed exhaust, dented pride. Smile

He has dropped his CBR a couple of times due to a hill + side stand moment and knee giving way at traffic lights

Cracked mirror then broken mirror stem was total damage. Crash bungs fitted

Edit
It is very easily done. Big bikes at slow speed can be a bit cumbersome if you get slightly off balance

Okay no one actually said this but I dropped my 125 a few times pushing it offroad, no damage as it isn't faired, and once coming round an icy corner, again no damage, except my ego. I am just getting back into cornering again after about 1000 miles of 5mph cornering and pissing people off on roundabouts.

Shortly after i got my bike, I for some reason decided to attempt a u-turn on it. I'd only done a 5 day course with no prior experience and was a bit iffy on u-turns for most of those days.

Well.... if it wasn't for the fact that my bike is a baby ninja (250r) and the fact i was able to hold it up, it would have been on its side Razz

Yep you'll drop it sooner or later, hopefully in the garage eh.
Best thing i did was get an off-road bike as my 1st ride. Dropped it quite abit, which was ok cos i was greenlaning <30mph spills. Straighten the loosened levers and off i went again. Best learning i ever did.

I've owned 7 bikes and have dropped around 4 of them I think. I can't remember whether I dropped a couple of them, actually, I know I got hit head on with a car on one of them and my memory of that period in general is a bit hazy!

I recon 8 out of 10 will drop it in the first year, even if it's a simple forget to put the side stand down properly or slip when pushing it out of the garden thing.

Truth.

I dropped my Bandit on the driveway trying to turn round, and my GS went down when The Scrotes pushed all the parked-up bikes over the other day.

The guy who bought the Bandit nearly dropped it before he left (I had to catch it), then dropped it when he locked the front later (trying to stop for a scrote running across the road, incidentally...)

Bikes are two points of contact desperately seeking a third, and if you run out of talent or get distracted parking up (as is likely while you're settling in) it's perfectly possible to lose it. Ergo the usual statements of "You -will- drop your first bike." etc. By all means buy a bike with a fairing, but be prepared to protect it with bungs and the like or risk the expense of new panels when it goes down by whatever cause.

ive dropped my gpr twice *touch wood* both times were literaly with in 5 mins of each other. i was riding along a road and my wallet fell out of my pocket, so i stopped on this slanty bit of concrete by th side of the road, put the stand down, and as i was leaning it over the stand flicked back up ( crappy italian/spanish bikes ) and it just dropped. went and got my wallet, and my foot slipped as i was lifting it of the stand. that was hard picking a 50 up. really dont want to drop my 400. Embarassed

I have great difficulty lifting my bike up. My last bike, a GSX750f, I was incapable of lifting on my own. I can just about lift the S4 but its a big strain. I've tried the bum against seat, lift with your legs thing, but found that impossible, so hefted it up instead the usual way.

Pish. I rode the 750 for months without dropping it, and the RF more than enough without dropping it. In fact the only bike I have ever dropped was a KX125, although I did still manage to feck up the panels royally thanks to a nice collection of rocks in the middle of a track Confused
