I know there's been lots of fitness threads on here before but here's another one. Man up and deal with it.

I used to be naturally fit, but age is catching up with me.

Currently I can run for about 20 minutes. Just. I can't think of many things worse than being a skinny bloke with a pot belly, so I'm going to be following "Training Planner 2" from here
https://www.icicle-mountaineering.ltd.uk/training.shtml

https://apholt.net/upload/fitnesschart.JPG

Unless I get karma based to hell I'm going to post a weekly update on how I'm getting on.

Anyone else want to get fitter and try this?
Easier to stay motivated with a group thing.

I need to get fit again. Before these new leathers do not fit me....Embarassed

Since I stopped doing kickboxing, my fitness has disappeared along with most of my muscle mass....

I'm looking for something I can fit around my job. I work 10am-9pm on a 4 week, 4 days on 3 days off rota. My days off, more or less alternate each week.

Personally I find running dull, my advice would be to find a mate who is willing to play squash with you, its much more fun. On the taking it easier days badminton is still fun whilst being less strenuous.

Although I know nothing about you so that idea may be entirely impractical for some reason.

I also find running boring but have heard it's a good way of strengthening the leg bones and joints as they react to stress from vibrations and being put under load. If I wanted to lose weight and tone up a bit I would either do laps of a swimming pool or start cycling, but each to their own Thumbs Up

When I started to gain bulk and muscle I took pictures before I started, and looking back I'm happy with what I've achieved so far, it might be worth doing something like that so you know how far you've come!

To be fair even when you classify yourself as 'a runner' the first 10 minutes are nearly always the most difficult, as you have to settle into a rhythm with your stride and breathing, so keep going as it gets so much better once you're settled. Very Happy

I'd recommend running with a club or friend (I run with my dog Embarassed no friends!) as it can be really good fun. Clubs are usually very friendly and full of all types of people and standards.

Try https://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/. It's not free, so maybe not ideal till you know what's going on with the job thing.

Training planner 1
Assumes absolutely no fitness at all, and builds you up to running for 30 minutes over eight weeks. We produced this planner as there are a fair few people each season who contact us saying "It's eight weeks to my course, and I haven't done any training yet. What do you recommend I do?". Ignoring the urge to say "Put the phone down, don't go to McDonalds, get your running kit on, and get outside", below is a training planner for you. If you have really done no training before this, then we most strongly advise you to get medical advice before starting training. Below the table are full explanations of what each training session should involve.

p.s. Smoking is no excuse, I know plenty of people way fitter than me who smoke.

I find running rather boring, and if I find something boring I am less likely going to be motivated enough to do it on a regular basis

But anyway looks like a good plan so hope you keep it up and look forward to monitoring your progress!

Press-ups, sit-ups and a set of free weights.

Punch bag is sooo stress reliving
And weights, pressups/situps is man stuff Razz Thumbs Up

First off how unfit are you? Second, how fit do you want to get?

If you are a complete begginner and you stuck to that religiously then it would work ok for a few weeks. You WILL get bored though. I'd try and find a sport to do on one of those days for now. Football etc. If you want to do climbing then find a local indoor place and do that on one of the workout days.

That plan looks extremely easy and something that would be reccomended to big bloaters or uber skinny no muslce people.

Good luck with it anyway.

I hate when people say 'get fit'... Just man up and abit you couldn't give a stuff if you're out of breath after 200 metres or 20 miles. It's just a euphemism for a beer gut.

Join the club. It sucks.

I've just taken up squash, although I'm not getting down there nearly enough. I jog over there, and get down the gym now and again.

What irks me is my 12 month cycle. Get fat, take up something and lose the weight, lose motivation as not fat anymore, get fat, take up something....

It's irritating as fuck. When I was boxing I got back down to just under 15 stone and was still a bit irked about the remaining last inch (I can never get rid of that), then clubs changed and it stopped being fun. Had exams and summer, ended up chunky again (within literally 5-6 months) so started going to the gym manically (at least 3 times a week) for about 5 months, got to exams and summer and relaxed... put on two stone.

So now I'm back at 16.5-17stone, looking husky, and getting irritated thinking about all that time I spent getting 'thin' (Laughing aka less chunky) thats counted for jack shit. All I have is alot more muscle then before the gym mania, but that just makes me look even fatter Evil or Very Mad

Come on, hands up anyone else who puts on muscle piece of piss, but is just constantly porky unless they train their arse off Crying or Very sad

I'm in that boat bonny, I can get big and lean easily when I'm eating right and training properly, soon as something changes (Job change recently) it goes to waste. It always happens when I'm in that zone where your gains are the best. Crying or Very sad

Sign up for my local gym is this weekend, so looking forward to it. Going to miss the convenience of going at lunch though.

All of these run for 1 min and recover for 1.5 mins are great but I'd need a stop watch to keep track.

HIIT training does prove to be the best form of cardio apparently for fat loss as it puts your body in a state of confusion. Confused

Before you start running sort out a decent diet and the results will be evident sooner. Personally I prefer swimming as you get out and have a shower and you are fine.

Bleep tests are also a good form of training and you only need 2 cones, 20 metres of space and an MP3 player.

Can't do running and not a fan of it outside an' stuff anyway.
Have been making an effort at the GYM though (By the way Al', Canons has a much better average level of totty, I'd say Wink... as well as being a bit shinier, despite being only very exepnsive, rather than rediculously expensive.)

I find group exercise stuff like spinning etc works for me as I do actually last out the time.

Starting off looking for what to eat before and after exercise, I ended up reading Tom Vemuto's 'Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle'. Think it may be an 'net-only ebook, not sure, but it is spammed all over the internet.
However, it does seem to have lots of good points based on sciency stuff. A lot of it is stuff I already know, but laid out in a good sequence to think about.

On the weight thing:
I'm trying the eat six meals a day thing (something I was aware of)... according to my calorie counter program I'm still generally eating too little.
Of course in the past I've always done the worst thing for weight; not eating much in the day, so I'm tired and my body starts going into a 'starvation' mode, then eating loads later on, which makes the body much more likely to store it as fat.

As much as running is boring as fook, it gets rid of fat the quickest. I lost 3 stone over a 6 month period due to running and keeping my diet at a maximum of 1500 calories a day.

I've now managed to sustain my weight on a good diet, with treats in between.

I have got a gym membership, but wouldn't recommend it for losing weight, you never push yourself enough. Gyms are only good for weight training and I go to the gym 3 times a week, it's a 1.5 mile run there as well which helps.

Depends on the person - for me it works a lot more than self-motivated out door stuff.
Enduro motorcycling maybe I will keep going and trying to do more when really knackered, but even cycling, which I enjoy, I won't generally, unless I'm riding with people and feeling competitive.

One of the things stressed in the book below is that more muscle=more calories burnt. Muscles burn calories doing 'nowt, so if you've got more muscle you can eat more/lose weight faster with the same food.
Also mentioned that the type of exercise doesn't really matter (I'd suspect rowing, say, would be better than running if done for the same time period)... but the amount and how often. As often as possible and for forty five minute sessions seems to be the best.

To some degree I'd be more motivated to do weights myself at home, especially if I wasn't trying to combine it with a decent amount of cardio.

Obviously it is down to the individual, I have weights and a pull up bar at home, but never use it. I need to be at the gym to do my weights properly.

When I was fat I went to the gym and lost a stone initially, but that was it, got to my comfort zone and struggled to push mysef further.

I found with running that developing a competive streak helped and starting running races encouraged me to push myself to go faster and further. I play football on sundays as well.

Doing muscle training is good, apparantly it raises your metabolism for 24 hours afterwards, compared to cardio which only lasts for 20 minutes after training, however it is not really that effective for rapid weight loss.b

I think you need a good mix of weight training and cardio. Seemed to be working when I was doing both regularly.

Walk to gym, 10 minutes of fast running on a treadmill, an hour on weights et al.

The thing is, I get so bloody bored. Today I did 2 hours of squash (jog to the place, 90 minutes playing a mate, 30 minutes on my own) and knobbed about doing some weights. Left more because I was bored then tired.

Unfortunately the whole 'muscle burns fat for you' theory is a little optimistic. Whilst I may have a rather annoying spare tyre, I've got slabs of muscle. It never seems to stop the fat gain. So don't think that all you need is to work those biceps a bit and whoosh, no problems ever again.

I'm also getting quite despondent about this cycle. This is at least the 3rd time I got fat after a massive drive to get 'slim' (Laughing yeh right), and this time I'm not firing myself in to it quite as manically. Just seems a bit pointless. If I wasn't arsed about getting laid I seriously wouldn't bother.

Hence my point, this whole getting 'fit' thing is a myth. We just feel ugly when we're fat.

Indeed, though I would like to be fitter for the competitive bike stuff too.

Definitely worth a read of the book I mentioned above... though he does get a bit evangelical at points, there's lots of good stuff in there, some of which hopefully I'll be able to make last longer than initial weight loss.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm currently at 15 1/2 Stone, with a 36 inch waist. I can eat like a beast and the wheight comes straight on, takes me forever to get rid of it. I am useless at running - always have been, even when young and healthy, now if I try it is a waste of time, I'm out of breath and energy before it's even been worth it.

Don't know if anyone saw the program on TV last night, forget what it was, they made really skinny people eat about 4000 calories a day for 4 weeks. Some put on quite a bit of fat, some changed weight, but not shape etc.

But at one point they said one of the problems with the 'obese' population, is our bodies see our 'obese' weight as it's 'proper' weight.....so no matter what you do, your body want's to be at that 'obese' stage.

Isn't it bloody just.

These damn body fascists in the media Laughing

To be honest I think most of our problem is living in this damn cold climate with the proles. Put me somewhere hot for a few weeks with local food and I drop weight without giving it a second thought.

Here... Bah.

Oh and I'm over at Active4less behind Lister Hospital. It's only £13 a month (plus a £17 quid joining fee). It's not quite the same luxury as I was used to in Bangor JJB for £20 a month (student rate, off peak - ie get in there before 4pm on week days, the horror!), but its got 3 squash courts and a sauna. No jacuzzi, pool or lockers that work, but meh.

Oh and it's got a 'punchbag' corridor, full of all kinds of natty punchbags/speedballs. And a full size ring upstairs Very Happy

Why, fancy coming to the Gym with me? I need a more reliable squash partner. I go there with James (from biology) and hes got a dodgy back and cock all stamina.
