Its funny, I know the SV650 has a bit of a reputation and it is scoffed at by some ... just wondering the prominent reason why? Thinking

No beef here either. Was very much on the 'consider' list before the 675 showed up.

If it had 20 more bhp, and didn't have Suzuki build quality, I would have considered one. I would have considered an SV1000 if there were many about, but again I don't trust Suzuki build quality for an all year round bike.

I've had a go on a mates Curvy SV650. It was full of torque, Really did pull well. But I just couldnt get comfortable with it. No idea why, Just couldnt.

Nothing against them however.

I nearly got one as my first bike, but its just physically too small for me.

Its definitely either a learner or commuter bike though, to me.

Hi

Doesn't really push any buttons for me for what I need and want from a bike.

We have considered one for Charlotte due to their reputation for being small but they are too tall (seat heights on them are not remotely low, and they are not particularly narrow either).

All the best

Keith

I'd considered getting a tatty early 'S' model, rattle-can sprayjob etc and reconditioning / upgrading the suspension to make it the ultimate hooning tool.

They are great bikes and can be had for peanuts.

I would, its a fantastic little bike. Its unintimidating, and yet you can thrash it. The handling isn't as good as a full on sportsbike but its not far off.

I think the general standard of riding would be better if instead of some people being restricted to 33bhp for two years, that everyone was restricted to a 650cc twin for two years.

too small, and a bit like gixers a little too common for my taste, though have considered a curvey with a body kit as a track machine/caferacer

Its funny people talk about the physical 'size' of the SV ... I don't think it is overly small or overly large ... its just kinda 'average' ... in fact I'd say pretty much everything about the SV is average (for a non out and out sports bike) ...

Looks, performance, size, weight, handling ... I really can't see it has any great advantages or disadvantages over its direct competitors - the fazer, hornet, bandit etc in size and weight, its just got the V-Twin sound and power delivery. Its the only one of its 'gang' that has a v-twin ...

Personally I think the V-Twin potentially makes the SV the most 'fun' out of the aforementioned, but I am not sure a V-Twin is as nice to live with as a turbine smooth IL4 non-sports 600 ...

I'd never own an SV650 because the qulaity of the materials they are mader from and the overall finish is astonishingly poor. Even by Suzuki standards.

If I owned one for 12 months, there would be nothing left of it but a pile of white powder.

Before the Suzuki owners get all defensive and say it's my fault for not washing it, this doesn't happen with a Honda.

I have two mates who owned them. One sold his because he couldn't keep up with the parts rotting off it and bought a 10 year old VFR750 instead (which was in better nick than his 2 year old SV despite it having had two sets of fork stanchions and three rear brake callipers on warranty). The other replaced all said parts with different ones. Niether would have another.

Thats why.

And the fact that a lot of owners dont seem to accept that fact.

I'm at the stage where I want my bikes to be special in some way.

Hummm ....

Now you are right, hondas are the best for anti-corrosion and build quality - no argument ....

But to say the SV is built of monkey metal ... I have to say I have non supporting evidence to that claim ...

My road SV has done at least 2 winters with me (god knows how many before), ridden daily on commute ... sure it got the odd wash when I could be 4rsed in the summer, perhaps as frequently as one a week when heavy salt was out mid-winter, but - as I do to all my year-round bikes .. a good old liberal application of WD40 over everything that is important and I really can't say it suffers from corrosion any more than any honda I have owned .... but then I did give the hondas this basic care too ..

The exhaust on the SV is stainless as standard too ... so unlike my old honda CBR600, and Kawasaki ZZR600 - to site a couple of examples - that didn't, at least I didn't have to worry about the downpipes/collectors turning to snot overnight Wink

I think the 'bland' tag comes into force. As has been said, does everything OK and nothing more.

From reading this forum, most people on here like to have different/exciting/unusual/modified bikes and the SV doesn't really push any of those buttons.

Saying that, when my daughter turns 17 and passes her test, it's probably one of the first bikes (restricted) I'll look at for her

Having had a naked and a faired sv I would not have any hesitation in getting another if I needed a cheap reliable bike. The naked was the better of the two but both suited me and the job I needed them to do.

Nothing wrong with them but they aren't exactly 'exciting'.
I found the finish was not that good with rust spots appearing on fork sliders after a couple of years even though it rarely saw salt.

You see, its the opposite reasons why it ticks the boxes for me ...

Ok -

Its not so fast I have to constantly keep myself in check speed wise (that fecking p1sses me off about >60hp bikes!!) - but it IS certainly fast enough for giggles if you want (and you can about do double the national speed limit on it, so it is not SLOW) ... but it is also safe enough to see off most cars/safely power away from junctions/overtakes etc.

Its OK looking, so not embarrassed to ride/be seen on, but I am not petrified of leaving it in town - unlike a s3xy/expensive sports bike ...

It munches the miles without excessively eating consumables (compared to s3xy kit) ....

The suspension/chassis is actually crap enough that you feel you have to 'work' the bike to get up to speed on the twisties (and again, but virtue keeps you in better check speed wise) ... but its not so bad it'll spit you off randomly or you can't keep up with most other riders/bieks ... to my mind it is more fun having a bit of a wrestle with a bike at 59mph in a 60 (legal) than doing 80mph (illegal) on a perfectly sure footed sports bike ... that is just not challenging/fun to me ...

Also again, with only being a 60hp bike, you need to dance on the gear leaver a bit ... I like that ... you lose that element on a IL4 thou ..

So you see its 'averageness' that FOR ME actually puts it above a traditionally 'better' bike in all those boxes ... therefore its averageness actually makes it BETTER than something that is better ... if that makes any sort of random sense to anyone!!!! Very Happy
