Its funny, I know the SV650 has a bit of a reputation and it is scoffed at by some ... just wondering the prominent reason why? ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity. |

I nearly got one as my first bike, but its just physically too small for me.
Its definitely either a learner or commuter bike though, to me. ____________________ Suzuki GSX-R750K4 ~ Mivv GP |

I'd considered getting a tatty early 'S' model, rattle-can sprayjob etc and reconditioning / upgrading the suspension to make it the ultimate hooning tool.
They are great bikes and can be had for peanuts. ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

too small, and a bit like gixers a little too common for my taste, though have considered a curvey with a body kit as a track machine/caferacer ____________________ "intelligent inattention is preferable to unintelligent tinkering"

I'd never own an SV650 because the qulaity of the materials they are mader from and the overall finish is astonishingly poor. Even by Suzuki standards.
If I owned one for 12 months, there would be nothing left of it but a pile of white powder.
Before the Suzuki owners get all defensive and say it's my fault for not washing it, this doesn't happen with a Honda.
I have two mates who owned them. One sold his because he couldn't keep up with the parts rotting off it and bought a 10 year old VFR750 instead (which was in better nick than his 2 year old SV despite it having had two sets of fork stanchions and three rear brake callipers on warranty). The other replaced all said parts with different ones. Niether would have another. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Having had a naked and a faired sv I would not have any hesitation in getting another if I needed a cheap reliable bike. The naked was the better of the two but both suited me and the job I needed them to do. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

From reading this forum, most people on here like to have different/exciting/unusual/modified bikes and the SV doesn't really push any of those buttons.
Saying that, when my daughter turns 17 and passes her test, it's probably one of the first bikes (restricted) I'll look at for her |
You see, its the opposite reasons why it ticks the boxes for me ...
Ok -
Its not so fast I have to constantly keep myself in check speed wise (that fecking p1sses me off about >60hp bikes!!) - but it IS certainly fast enough for giggles if you want (and you can about do double the national speed limit on it, so it is not SLOW) ... but it is also safe enough to see off most cars/safely power away from junctions/overtakes etc.
Its OK looking, so not embarrassed to ride/be seen on, but I am not petrified of leaving it in town - unlike a s3xy/expensive sports bike ...
It munches the miles without excessively eating consumables (compared to s3xy kit) ....
The suspension/chassis is actually crap enough that you feel you have to 'work' the bike to get up to speed on the twisties (and again, but virtue keeps you in better check speed wise) ... but its not so bad it'll spit you off randomly or you can't keep up with most other riders/bieks ... to my mind it is more fun having a bit of a wrestle with a bike at 59mph in a 60 (legal) than doing 80mph (illegal) on a perfectly sure footed sports bike ... that is just not challenging/fun to me ...
Also again, with only being a 60hp bike, you need to dance on the gear leaver a bit ... I like that ... you lose that element on a IL4 thou ..
So you see its 'averageness' that FOR ME actually puts it above a traditionally 'better' bike in all those boxes ... therefore its averageness actually makes it BETTER than something that is better ... if that makes any sort of random sense to anyone!!!! ____________________ The purpose of life is to fight maturity.
