my manual states oil changes should be carried out every 4,000 miles IIRC, but i have been doing it every 1,000 miles(maybe less).
mainly just because it sounds and feels great after fresh oil and i like it.

Is this too often, is it good, bad or just an uneccesary waste of money?

Waste of money in my book. You can't possibly do it too often but I imagine the benefits are minimal, more or less zero.

I do 1k on everything Ive ever had, works well.

I can agree with what you say aswell, the gearchange feels a lot better when its got fresh oil in it.

Cheers

Hi

Not sure it should make any difference doing it that often. Only down side is the attack on your wallet, wear on the sump plug thread and possibly a few extra seconds running with low pressure when first started after the oil change.

The oil itself shouldn't really wear out anything like that quickly (the change to a black colour is contamination).

Would suspect any change you feel is in your mind.

But if it makes you happy go for it.

All the best

Keith

You won't be doing any harm, but you don't need to do it that often.

With the bikes virus has owned its a different matter - CB250RS in particular really likes clean oil.

I change my oil about every 1,000miles normally before that.
My reckoning is oil catches the impurities, so if i change it more it'll keep engine/gearbox wear down. It's also been said that shorter journeys or long periods of non-use mean more frequent changes.
It like alot of things depends on £'s in yer pocket.

Pat

PS My tip

Invest in a magnetic sump bolt.

Every 500 miles on the YX150 engine in my Pit bike.

BUT, it only takes 900ml of oil. So its not very expensive at all.

depending on the make/model of your engine and the quantity/quality of oil used, it would probably work out cheaper to buy a known good secondhand spare engine and do your oil changes at the recommended intervals rather than changing the oil that often

1000 miles is a little over the top, I would say 2000 at the very minimum for me. Also do the filter very other change?!

Oh and you're getting ripped off on that oil from halfords, I buy silkolene semi synth from the local bike shop for £20 per 4 litres.

I've changed the oil in my hornet once since april. I've done about 6.5k on it now, and the manual recommends every 8k.... might do it soon tbh.

Fuck me, that is a lot of cash to be spunking on oil.

Oil down here I can get for $20 (about 9GBP) for 5 litres, and I don't change it more regularly than every 4,000km.

Oh to be young, single and with disposable income!

Its well over the top in my opinion and just a waste of money. In 1000 miles a decent semi synthetic oil will be almost as fresh as the day you put it in, I dare say that it doesn't even change colour in those 1000 miles. Shocked

A thousand miles is overkill for a road bike. It's not getting a particularly hard time in the engine.

You can at least double that and do a filter change half as often.

just a curious question.

why is it you think you know what your engine needs better than the highly paid team of people that designed it?

do you think this team of highly paid engineers might have set the oil change intervals on the dangerous side of safe?

believe it or not they do actually test engines to see how long they last with all sorts of variables chucked in, 4K miles is adequate unless it is a track bike you are thrashing fuck out of it every time you ride Wink

As long as the stated service interval is 4k... on some bikes it isn't. Like competition enduros and supermotos for example.

indeed, but as the OP said that the laid down interval is '4K IIRC' and his sig says he's riding an 03 CBR6 I though it was a safe assuption it is neither an enduro bike or SM.

therefore, 4K miles is adequate unless it is a track bike you are thrashing fuck out of it every time you ride Wink

i dont think i know better, it just seems to lose that perfectly smooth feel after about 1000 miles and it niggles at me.
Its like when a baby cries because it wants feeding, im sure it wouldnt hurt it to wait a bit longer and have its feed at the normal time, but it would be a much happier baby if you feed it when it feels hungry and not when its supposed to be hungry.

bit of a crap analogy(if thats the right word) but thats just how i see it.

i do it every 2000-2500 on all my bikes. 1000 is a little OTT but its your money and your choice. it wont do it any harm so carry on if youre happy with it.

My owners manual and the shop manual available on the net to download tell me different. There is an "R" meaning replace on the subject of engine oil on 0.6k, 8k,16k,24k,32k etc.

Waste of money.....

My last change was after about 6K miles.
And that was running cheepo supermarket oil. Still felt the same after the change. Which i only did as it has now got to winter and oil is starting to cunk up.
Next change will be around May in time for summer....
