I'm after some cage help here, car wouldn't start this morning (so a nice 50 minute walk to work , but anyway...)
It's a M reg XLD, over Christmas it was left standing a couple of weeks and the battery went flat. Once charged up it was fine, and has been fine (in regular use) until this week.
Last couple of mornings the battery has seemed 'funny', like one sluggish whirr but then still started up straight away and ran fine. So I assumed it was the cold and it would charge itself up while running and be fine.
This morning, it's like the battery is totally dead. Turns over to the extent of a weak 'chug' every few seconds. Tried double heating the glow plugs, tried using a fully charged booster pack on the battery, but nothing (and it's drained my power pack).
I don't really know anything about diesel engines, what turning over should sound like etc.
I'm thinking either:
Battery fucked beyond help - need new one.
Glow plugs all fucked at once
Starter motor? Or would I expect a clicking rather than chugging?
Fuelling issue? Not sure how this works with diesel engines
Air filter? A google search mentioned this, that because the engines draw air constantly, the filter needs to be clean etc or summit?
I'm thinking the battery is most likely, but anything else I could check first? any suggestions appreciated

Hi
I would go along with the battery being dead. Diesels need a lot of power to crank them over, so possible the booster pack just wasn't up to the job.
Would think it is unlikely all the glow plugs have died at once.
With the starter motor it would depend what has gone wrong, but likely you would just get a click from the solonoid and nothing from the starter.
Diesel fueling is the work of an expensive Satan. Possibly an issue but unless you have just run it out of fuel then I would leave this until last.
Air filters do need to be fairly clean, but tend not to cause a sudden failure (well, unless someone has directed a hose pipe up the intake onto it).
All the best

Agreed with the above, certainly sounds like the battery is at fault.
Not only are diesels heavy on the battery the cold weather won't help either as batteries tend to struggle to retain power in cold conditions (can't quite remember why though!).
There are some tests to see whether the battery is faulty but I'd say a new battery is never that bad an investment tbh ____________________ A quater of a NC30 and a whole tatty ZX6R J2, that's plenty...
