rustky looking stuff in petrol tank

in my petrol tank i have a rusty looking kinda stuff on the metal, its a k reg so quite old, is this normal?

also, the engine just lost revved and died, i can hear petrol in the tank but not a lot, and it tends to work for a while on the primary tank then stop, and lasts quite a while on the secondary, i guess that means im just out of petrol rather than it being messed up...im very new to this, lol

Ok I'll be serious for once...

The rust is probably from lack of petrol and the bike being stood for a while, or not used much and not been filled up with petrol?

It happens when the tank is left empty.

It's not really good to have that in your fuel supply so you want to clean the tank out before re-filling it.

don't USE WATER

Get some petrol and find some "tank cleaner" I can't remember what it's called but I've seen it in shops just go and ask in Halfords or something (on second thoughts... Eh?

)

Clean it out with the cleaner stuff and some petrol then fit back to bike and re-fill it and you should be ok.

What bike is it? Have you got a Haynes manual for it?
Usually they are attached at the rear, underneath the seat (so will require removal of the seat first) by a bolt. There may be other smaller bolts at the front of the tank to attach it to the frame rails.
Also you need to identify the fuel pipe arrangement (for reassembly) and undo the spring clips (or other hose clamp) just make sure you switch to OFF on the fuel tap first, or get some fuel hose (from a bike shop) and drain the tank into a can.

Rust is bad, it will clog up your fuel filter, the carbs (if it gets that far) and is almost certainly causing your loss of power.

im in canterbury, i think the loss of power is being caused by the low fuel isnt it? its fine on the secondary tank but with the primary i cant start the bike without choke, i think its just out of petrol (almost)

for some reason it still starts up for a while, on primary, gets weaker and weaker then cuts out, then if i try again another 15 mins later it'll go again for a slightly shorter amount of time, but its fine on secondary, just hope i have enough petrol to get to the station..

Yes - thats just excess fuel sitting about that it's burning off, the reserve uses the same tank as the primary, just it is tapped off a bit lower.

You will probably have enough in reserve for a good 5 to 10 miles, but the idea is that as soon as you hit reserve you start trying to find a station to fill up - you'll get to your local petrol station fine.

Usually requires it once every 100 or so miles, it's not like Road Tax mate, you can't fuel it in advance for 6 or 12 months Laughing

When you fill it up, reset the small odometer thing (should be a twiddly knob). Then run the bike until it hits reserve.

In future, you can fill it up a few miles before it hits reserve, as you know how many miles it will last.

oh and also, is it normal to NEED to open the choke all the way to start the bike? i can turn it off after about 5 seconds with it in, but i have to have it on to start it

my final absolutely stupid question is...ive never ridden before, cbt is saturday..when i fill it up with fuel will the pump shut off automatically, or do i need to keep looking in the tank?

(everyone starts somewhere...lol)
