Ive not riden an R6 that is resticted but it has been discussed loads of times.
The general outcome of which is it'll be pants
Think this is because the R6 is so revvy and makes all its power up the top end, restricting it leaves you with no power and the bike would never gets going.
Have a look at the 400's and if they are a bit small for you check out the thundercat or an older cbr600.
The R6 is a lot of bike for a new rider, thats not to say it can't be done but your better off with something a bit closer to the 33bhp mark.
The other half has got a CB400, same engine as the NC23 CBR400 (I think) and I rode it before and after the restiction, it does take a bit of the nip out of it and the top end is about 85 but its still really good fun and quick enough to beat most cars off the line

Ok, this is a random 2000 (exactly the same engine as the 2002) R6 dyno found via google ....
https://image.sportrider.com/f/9054934/146_01_z+2000_r6_dyno_chart+.jpg
Your bike will be like any other 2002 R6 that is never revved over ~5,500 RPM .... its still the same bike ... it just has ~1/3 the peak HP ...

The issue isn't really torque I'd say - the R6 produces more than most 33hp or near bikes I reckon.
The issue to my mind is gearing.
A 33hp stock bike will have five gears that top out at what might be a theoretical 110mph. An R6 with the same power will only need maybe three gears to get there - so it's like you're riding the slower bike with just second, fourth and sixth.
Worse, though, is that people will naturually use the higher gears, where there's even less go available than on the stock bike.
So, go for some heavy down-gearing if you find it bothers you.
Oh and a large percentage of the time "I really want it" translates to "I really want to mate with it, because I think it looks that good" and has little to do with how suitable a *bike* it is for the rider .
Incidentally Blue, the power delivery will be changed a bit, but that's not too far off the truth of it . |

Another point of view, is that as a new rider chances are you haven't experienced that amount of power so you won't be at a dis-advantage because you won't be aware of what the lack of power is like in comparison to normal, then it will be like a new bike when you get it un-restricted. Also, it will make you a better rider because you'll be able to do more with less power so you'll know yours and the bikes limits more.
That's among my selling points to the rents... ____________________ Roger wrote: Women don't get damp for clingy puppies. Get some better happy pills, hit the gym & buy a medallion the size of a dinner plate. Job done |

Would I be right in saying a ZX6 G/J model would be better? ____________________ Bikes : 2006 CBR125R - 2004 Monster 620ie - 2004 ZX-6R B1H - 2005 Monster S2R 800 - 2011 Street Triple - 2009 Streetfighter 1098 - 2014 ZX-6R 636

Im not quite sure of the milage at this moment but it seems to be a really good price at £2700.00.
I have a A2 license and the gentlemen at the dealership have informed me they will restrict it for just £50.
Im just here to ask the well imformed folk of BCF for any opinions
Also if anybody currently ownes or has owned 1.
Many thanks Chris . |

If you WANT to get a crash damaged bike, make sure the repairs have been done - mine was a CAT C but I got it for £2400 delivered! It would have been 2150 othewise (but 250 is a good price to pay for delivery IMO with the amount of snow we had and the hassle it would have been to train it up and ride down in the snow and pay for fuel etc!). I saw a few bikes on biketrader from cheshire salvage but I got detracted when they were doing some subliminal messaging in polish - so it's rather dodgy!
Back to your original question; don't get an R6, get a cheap and cheerful ZX6R - G/J's can be had for 1400 and have very good engines, good comfort and even better tank range. With the R6, you're guaranteed that it'll have been thrased and it also has a questionable 2nd gear! Ninjas or Gixxer Srads is where the smart money is - honda's generally hold their value better, hence are more expensive for the same model year. I've had enough of R6 riding 18-20 year olds who subsquently mess up a very good bike due to their overexhuberance to ride a bike which they bought with their heart and not with their head; combined with a distinct lack of riding skill (not saying that I'm any better). For a first big bike, don't spend more than £1500 even it is for a supersports 600. Buy with the common knowledge that the previous owner at some point would have been a keen teen and would have thrashed and crashed it; but make sure it's mechanically and structurally sound.
Sorry for a bit of a rant, but there are other choices out there for young un's other than R6's.
