for example you could use a feeler gauge or old camera film to try and clean out the seal, failing that you could actually change the fork seals for hopefully a permanaent fix.

or alternatively you could take the ratbike approach.

The fork seals leaked so I drilled holes in the bottom of the legs and they quit leaking, it still has the 17 year old factory installed spark plugs in it as I have no earthly idea where the motor is to change them.

Anyway. Any good ratbiker knows you simply install a rolled up "sausage" of kitchen roll under each of the dust seals before you set off for the MOT.

Kitchen roll is only good for one MOT though.

As far as I know we don't have something quite equivalent to your MOT, unless I'm missing something. We have to get an inspection sticker, which is supposed to be a thorough inspection of indicators working, emissions, and basically ensuring that the vehicle isn't going to fall apart just beyond the parking lot. Locally the place simply takes your 5 bucks and gives you the sticker. He only looked at my bike to get the VIN off the headstock so he could fill out the info. In some states they are more strict and you must leave the vehicle, sometimes for several hours.
Some of the vehicles on the road here are atrocious. Dragging parts and leaving a trail of blue/gray smoke for a quarter of a mile. Broken down cars litter the roads alongside random pieces of other cars that managed to make it further down the road after lightening their load by dropping a muffler or door handle. Its absurd.

thats scary, I'm not trying to say that the MOT process is perfect but atleast it does pick up faults that otherwise could be left in a potentially dangerous state.

In fact, my bike won best rat bike at the Rat & Survival show one year. Whistle

Yep, I actually agree with MOT's, even though some of the fails can be picky.

Very generally, rat bikes naturally 'evolve', whereas survival bikes can be 'made'.

Well worth spending an hour or two looking through the 'readers rides', there's some fascinating stuff there. Thumbs Up

Along the lines of mudskippers post:

Ratbike = designed to keep on the road as cheap as possible
survivalbike = designed to last a long time/survive

Thats why most survival bikes have lots of crash protection etc.
