2t oil, choices, choices but which one is best?

I've never had a 2 stroke so please be gentle.

I need some engine oil for my new little scooter. Its a Yamaha YW100 (BeeWee or also called a BWS).

They are off road mad here in Oz and I never realised the variety of 2 stroke oils available, so what should I be on the look out for?

I've heard about scented oils too, any good for a bit of something different?

Just get a reputable company and no problem.

Any of the big oi; companys - Shell, BP, Esso or the specialists, Silkolene, Castol etc.

You aren't going to go wrong.

can also get fully synthetic oil and semi synthetic. fully synthetic is more for performance engines like for example a ktm 380. semi sythetic should be fine for you and it's cheaper also like mentioned any big oil names will be fine.

castrol tts fully synth was what i used in the nsr for 20,000 miles, so thats what i would suggest, although castrol do an oil specifically for scooters called castrol scoot-r, which may be the better option if you can get hold of it over there.

Also those scented oil things arent worth the extra money to be honest. Once they've been through the engine they all come out the same

haha i've never actually used them to be honest but a mate used to put it in his RS and i could never really smell much difference? The smell of burning 2T oil in the morning always used to get my blood rushing

Use the cheapest oil you can find.

All this crap about semi-synthetic and fully synthetic oils, and fancy Castrol Scoot-R, all pointless and unnecessary, expensive crap.

It's a scooter, not a GP bike.

any good quality 2t should be fine for it.

As already said, any oil from a good manufacturer will do the job on your scooter.

However, NEVER, EVER let it run out of oil. The consequences of it running out will be an expensive engine repair much sooner than needed.

I used to use full synthetic in the type R and Scooby but I understand that its a bit expensive for the little ped. Semi will probably give me the peace of mind that I'm trying to look after the engine as its been broken in the hard way.

I ask about different types of 2t oil as there appeared to be different weights of oil like 4t and no brands that I recognise.

As a rule of thumb, how much oil does a 2t get through or miles for full to empty?

I'll probably top up the oil reservoir every week or 2 to maintain levels. The dealers did tell me to just top up when the light comes on, reading posts like PeterNSR and his escapades would suggest maybe not.

Check your oil at least everytime you fill up with petrol and top up if required.
I checked my oil every other day at first until I got used to how much oil the bike burned in an average week then I just checked and topped up every week.

Jaso FB is a low grade oil, not really good enough for any modern machine as the oil supplys are turned down so low for euro emission laws... Most 1995 onwards machines need Jaso FC API TC as a minimum...

One thing people perhaps need to consider when stating "run any old sh1t" is that modern bikes tend to run pretty low amounts of oil ... 50:1 is pretty common, but also is 70:1 and even 80:1 ... I know my trials bike runs 70:1 ...

As a frame of reference, I seem to remember my 2-strokes from the 70s and 80s were were running ~25:1 ... so a modern bike could be running on only 1/3 the oil of my old bikes ...

Now engineering has improved over the years, but the only way I see it possible to run those sorts of levels of oil is if you have better oil technology ... i.e. Modern Synthetics ..

p.s. No idea what ratio the OPs scoot runs at (and lets face it, it is likely to be auto mix, so we won't know), but what I said above might want to be considered before dismissing the need for 'good' oil just coz it is a scoot ...


Anyway ... I personally like/use Rock Oil fully synth in my 2-stroke bikes ... coz I think it smells nice

I also use Shells castor oil (in my kart 2-stroke engines) ...
