Ok i have a mtx125 rwl on a J plate (92 model) and have decided it's time for a complete rebuild from the ground up.

Have decided on a plan of action for this project which goes like this.

1- Total strip down of bike, removel of engine ETC
2- Get to the bottom of the running problem it has, most evidence points towards the woodruf key snapping that holds the fly wheel on which let it rotate slightly on the crank changing the igition timing.
3- Total repaint of the frame from white to black. White as you may already know white is a bitch to keep clean.
4-replace steering bearings, swing arm bearings.
5-New con-rod, bottom end bearings, top end job and rebore to boot.
6- New plastics side panels, headlight cowl etc etc.

I have even looked into getting a set of USD forks from a 92 cr 125 and a swing arm as well so at least there,s disk brakes front and back instead of drum on the rear but that is something i am going to have to resarch ie measurement and fitment.

I intend of posting pictures as well so that you guy's can see the progress but i need to work out how to post pictures. If anybody here has any knowledge of the mtx then any hints or tips would be great.

Wheel my garage is not exactly perfect to work in no heating or lighting.. Yet Razz

Some links to some pictures of the mtx on bike pics. Some of them are a few months old but there 2 recent 1's taken the day before it started playing up.

Links.

In terms of graphix's or colour it's either going to be new red plastics and i have also looked on the D&D graphics site and contacted them regarding some union jack graphics custom made for the bike or some st george graphix's that they do. If not i know somewhere that i can get brand new plastics from any way and i think if i change the colour of the bike i will have to let the DVLA know and can't be bothered with the fuss of that, but will see once i am ready to make those decisions.

Satelliteone have you checked out the D&D website they do some nice graphix's for the DTR. Just thought you would like them for your project???

Started stripping the bike down today. Got as far as taking the engine out everything else like plastics, tank, seat etc etc removed as well.

There where several parts that where a bitch to get off. The air box and battery holder are a one part moulding and it was a nightmare to get off the frame as the rear pillion pegs where in the way so had to take them off and the 2 stroke tank just so i could turn and get the airbox out ( thought id be able to get the airbox off 1st before the 2 stroke tank)

How do i post picture's in my post's, so don't have to put links for them ??

The next bit is too remove the engine from the frame along with the bars, clocks, swing arm and the wheels.

I managed to get 1 engine mount undone but the bottom one and the front one will not budge even with heating them up. The one i did get undone had corroded alot so i am thinking that these bolts have not been undone since leaving the factory 18 years ago!! Mr. Green

Still have 1 more day off work so tomorrow's plan is to get the engine out swing arm off and inspect eveythin on the frame ready for stripping and repainting.

your cracking on a bit, cool. Are you thinking of getting the frame blasted then painted?. Takes bloody ages for nut n bolt rebuilds. Have a look at my GP100, thats 2 weeks work so far. not enuf hours in one day..lol

the DT is on hold, the idea is to sell on the GP when ive finished to fund the DTR a little.

Quick update..

Today after not much activity on the bike i managed to get the engine out of the frame. One of the nuts on the middle engine mount was mullered so thinking somebody else has had the engine out at some time in the past. Enigne out shock off as well. Have made a list of what needs doing and what i need to get.

Short list below

1, Complete engine gasket set
2, Swing arm bearings and seals (full set)
3, New or serviced rear shock.
4, Fork seals and oil and gators
5, New plastics maybe

I have also got a swing arm and a rear brake caliper from a 92 cr125 which will fit the mtx although looks like i may need to make some spacers and stuff, as i intend to make it a supermoto and can't do this with the drum brake set up on the orignal swing arm.

Also looking at a set of USD forks from the same cr125 the swing arm came from. Would i have to replace the whole front end for these to fit??

Couple of questions.

Can i use a heat gun to strip the paint or will this damage the frame?

Can i use a wire wheel in a drill to strip the frame paint if i cant use the heat gun or failing that some paint stripper ???

Speaking from experience it will look better / take less time / maybe cost less just to get it powdercoated instead of painting it.

100% Powdercoat it all.

Doesn't cost much and better finish than you painting. Probably works out cheaper in terms of how long it'll last.

Go with the powder coating, whilst you're at it get it blasted, paint stripping in my experience is a right arse and to get a good finish, it needs to be done all the way back. Probably won't cost much to get it blasted and powder coated either? talk to Mugenseiki (the guy with the DT, he's just had his done

Not sure if you aware that the new red MTX plastics that are sold on flea-bay from Thailand are darker red to those that were fitted to the European MTX (R119), so would probably have to buy a full set.

Quick up date on the project. Due to work comitments i have not had the time nor money to do anything to the bike, untill yesterday.

I have cleaned the frame down and the swing arm ready for stripping and painting. I took the head of as well yesterday to inspect the bore and piston and there is not a single mark on the bore or the piston. No side to side play on the conrod either.

The only problem i have is the forks. They are pretty much dead. The seals are errrrrrr....... well no seal at all will post pictures later.

Nearly every bearing in the rear suspension needs replacing along with the shock as well.
Will post some pictures when i get home from work.
