Calls for them to be compulsory?

Don't think they will catch on myself...

Making them compulsory is stupid and I hope it doesn't happen, but the jackets look pretty impressive to me. I'd definitely consider getting one.

The DFT have no plans to make them compulsary, but I did just see it on the news.

One of the texts in was

"I think motorcycles should were these because of the speeds they travel" Laughing

Typical beeb.

Their example was also rather poor.

How is an airbag jacket going to stop you breaking your pelvis? The pelvis usually breaked because of tank and airbox design on the motorcycle.

His spine and ribs would have been protected by a back and chest protector.

In one version, the jacket is attached to the bike by a lead which detaches when the rider has come off suddenly.

So there'll be a regular business in resetting or replacement of the jackets as people forget they're still connected.

Also if like cars they operate with a small explosive charge, I dont think petrol stations will like that risk on their forecourt

This is the bit that narks me off about it - yet another legal requirement. Rolling Eyes

Dozens of lives could be saved if they made helmets in cars compulsary. Wink

The law(if it were to come in) is also pretty much unenforcable to be honest as well. Unless you want to stop every motorcyclist.

They wouldn't be able to enforce it either. As it goes under the jacket.

Also I bet refills after a crash wouldn't be cheap. What if the gas cannister gets pierced during a crash... BOOM?

Logical next step: Fit an F16 ejector seat so when it looks like your gonna stack it, press a button and it blasts you 50ft up off your bike, then a parachute deploys and you drift slowly to earth. Should even be time for a fag on the way down.

Its only the Radio 1 news, so its not real news. Don't worry about it happening anytime soon.

Just watched that video. They show a guy who smashed himself up on a trackday and then insinuate that could have been prevented with an airbag jacket, neglecting the fact the jacket is textile so you couldn't use it on a track anyway. Good journalism Newsbeat.

Aye, that's the guy I'm referring to above. There's no way that jacket would have protected his pelvis.

Caught the tail end of this on the TV news.

I don't think we should be complacent, or next we know it will be compulsary.

Yet another cost to get into biking legally whilst restricting freedom?

More illegal riders thinking sod it with the licence and insurance?

More accidents due to above?

More laws to protect us?

Imagine a nice hot summers day, then adding an additional layer of (non breathable for the bags) clothing on under your leathers...

We'd all bake...

Why are the wankers using a TZR125 to test the jacket? Crying or Very sad At least use something like a shitty CG.

The guy seemed to come out with some crap too.

They'd make your insurance invalid if not wearing it though.

There is so little research on air bags. It could potentially be proven that they are more dangerous than they are helpful.

Why dont they come up with something sensible like replacements for all the centre barriors made out of steel cable that are lethal to bikers.

What did piss me off was that over-makeuped, under-brained autocue-monkey who read a viewer's comment out this morning at breakfast; "I think motorcyclists should all have to wear them because of the speed they go" I actually shouted OH DO FUCK OFF at my telly. And my telly did not deserve that at half seven thing morning. Sorry telly.

You can imagine on those bad days when your in a rush as well.

Stop the bike and turn off, Step off and start walking off, Jacket Inflates.

That said, i reckon the would help more than they would hinder. Thumbs Up

You lot are like a load of old grandma's I swear to god!

One potentially positive sign of something that MIGHT improve our safety, and because its a bit new, a bit different, you're all up in arms about it!!!

Firstly medical professionals are people that are generally (not always) worth listening to, secondly the dude testing the jacket was a STUNTMAN....Probably more used to falling off speeding vehicles than even the hardiest of motorcycle binners on here.

The air of negativity surrounding anything new here really does sum up the motorcycling community as a whole I think, and for the life of me I can't work out why!
