Why are MX bikes always very high up? I would have thought that for riding on slippery and loose surfaces, you want exactly the opposite - a low center of gravity?

You also want good ground clearance, soft suspension so you have more travel without hitting anything. Engine is lowest it can be, really. Only really heavy thing up top is you...

Which is why to get the best out of one, you stand up to give your center of gravity chance to over come the bikes.

Because you have a higher center of gravity you have a greater range of movement before you get to the point of no return, which makes then easier to control by body lean to counteract the bikes movement.

The other thing is wider bars and lightness make then easier to handle on slippery surfaces.

you do get grass track speedway bikes that have low clearance, and they are designed for low centre of gravity
