Basically, you need 3 things for combustion - fuel, air and spark. These can all be adjusted to get just the right mix for the engine to fire efficiently (more or less fuel and air, and different heat spark plugs).
Best bet is to refer to your friendly Haynes manual for your bike to see how to set them up.

cheers mate .see the thing is i bought the bike second hand and the air screw was screwed the entire way in and it was not running properly so we bored it out and put a new one in and it seems to run a bit better

Hi

It is easy to bugger up a carb with the needle screw, and someone tightening it right in hard in the past could well damage it.
