I need to change the silicone around my bath because its starting to split and let water through.

I've done it before no problems, But I always make a right mess when doing it.

Any tips or ways of doing it easily and neatly?

Buy one of those scrapers/edgers made for it, just pipe the stuff on and run it along the edges, makes it nice and clean.

Failing that cut a piece of card and use that.

Run two bits of masking tape, one on the wall the other on the bath with a small gap between them. Then run the silicone in the gap, smooth it down with your finger and remove the tape... Thumbs Up

As above and:

1/make sure you clean off ALL the old stuff and then wipe the area down with diluted bleach (to kill bacteria that make it go black or you are just sealing them in their new home)

2/ If possible fill the bath with cold water. They do move with weight and if you do this you will get a better seal. Leave the water in for 12 hours to let the seal go off a bit.

3/ don't try and seal it in one go. Do a small filling run right in the crack and leave for an hour or so (force in with finger as below). Then do the final run onto a consistent angle.

4/ Stick your finger in your gob (so it's wet) and run it down the silicone (have a damp cloth in the other hand to wipe off excess and keep it damp) this give a concave curve and forces the sealant into the angle. Don't push too hard just enough to get a nice curve.

Also bathroom sealant is better than silicone as it has mould inhibitors and tends not to shrink as much as silicone.

if you are gonna use the finger and masking tape way, make sure you lick or wet your finger a little, its hard enough to get off your hands.

Yeah, dip your finger in some water before you run your finger along it each time, it leaves a nice smooth finish.

If you can, fill the bath full of water, then put on the new sealant. This pushes the bath down a bit (which will happen when you have a bath or shower) and stops the sealant coming loose when you have baths and showers. Only drain the water once the sealant has set.

Wetness is defined by how much water can be held on by the surface tension of your hand.

As everybody said, lick your finger first. If the sealant does get stuck, then you can wipe off any excess in roxannes ears/noes/eyes and just LOL in her face and say to her that women are useless at DIY.

Alternatively you could wear a pair of gloves and wet the finger on these. However I suggest you man up and go bareback Very Happy

You mean your own spit or someone else's.

Personally I'd suggest sticking your grubby finger in someone else's mouth, even more so if you need to re-moisten it mid way through the job.
Not sure how it tastes but best to avoid finding out I'd say Thumbs Up
