Any particular model reccomendations/warnings?

I was looking at an FZR6 "streetfighter" the other day which was basically just fairingless, but tastefully done, that was going for about £600 I think, which looked pretty good to me. Any reason FZRs seem to be a little cheaper than equivilent age 600s?

Was also looking at getting an RF900 but they seem a little out of my price range, plus I couldn't bear me and the old man having matching bikes Laughing

You might find an FZR1000RU for under a grand if your lucky.

Sounds good to me.

I am only 17, but I have ridden thou's before and reckon I can handle them, even if I can't get the absolute best out of 'em. The hard bit is convincing my mum I'm not going to die Laughing

I rode an RF900 before plenty of poke but I found the handling attrocious, it felt alot bigger than it was.

I wouldn't bother with sports bikes under a grand i can't see them being good runners if you up it to 1500 you could get an old SRAD

See the only thou's I've ever ridden are things like those huge old CBR1000s etc., The RF feels pretty nimble for it's size in my world Laughing

Just go for a 600 mate, Ham's recommendation is the best so far. Plenty of poke for the road (dont really care if you've ridden thou's, you wotn have ridden any fairly decent bike to its proper "limit"), fairly easy to work on, parts plentiful, fairly cheap, and good fun Thumbs Up

An old steelie or early zx6r would be sweet.

Thumbs Up

Early ZX6R's last a long time. Even though I've had mine for 2 years, it doesn't age that badly.

I like ZX6-R's but I doubt their long term reliability, especially at 10+ years old. Steel framed CBR's are very capable bikes and have a reputation for toughness (barring reg / rec units and camchain tensioners), however I suggest you ride one as they are a bit errrr.... "boring"......

Wouldn't have been boring when you were 17, Blue Wink And its how you ride it!

Agreed Titz, I have a '99 zx6r, 24K miles and still goin strong (basic maintenance) and you have a...'97 mate? The flatter nosecone one anyways. And yours only brokeded cos of the crash.

Mines been abused and still fine.

Reliability is in the eye of the beholder IMO.

Where are people getting these bikes from?

I've been looking at G2's and they all come in at about £1400, and all the F1's I can find have either been crashed or broken.

Although my only source is fleabay which probably isn't the cheapest place.

Just found this after a few secs, but obviously you gotta do yaself some decent searching.

Clicky 6r

ZXR750's

Not zx7rs...different bike. Less pricey etc

Not much more power than a zx6r (if any) but more in your price range, a bit older. Obviously some savvy when looking to make sure you dont get a complete shitter, and perraps some TLC but the H and later L models were nice bikes.

Im only looking at roughly what I know, theres old GSXR 750's like Bluex suggested etc

I'd personally get it restricted for a little bit (a few months like) and then whop em out and be on your way. Im not starting a restriction war however, I juust reckon its a bit more responsible if you KNOW you're a bit of a mad-head on a bike. I arent at all. ( Shifty )

Fuck the full two years though, thats just retarded.

Just my opinion and no doubt I'll regret it when the replies swim in Laughing

Nice one Fawbish Thumbs Up

I was thinking about restrictions, reckon I'll probably do just that, as even though I have ridden big full power bikes, I haven't ridden them that much and have still had a couple of close calls, and I know I won't be able to resist going flat-out everywhere.

I was wondering about ZXR750s actually, but have been told they handle like sheds. Of course this was when I had about double my budget, now it's not really a concern tbh.

If you're after a sporty 600 and are scrabbling around for a grand it would probably be better to save up some more cash, otherwise you'll end up getting a shitter. A grand would buy a decent enough 400 though.

I had a ZXR750 H1 model.

The handling isn't bad per se, the problem is more that the bikes themselves are very heavy so if you don't weigh much they require a lot of effort. As BlueX5 says though, most large bikes of this age are going to weigh a similar amount. To be honest the handling on any 15-20 year old bike is likely to have gone 'off' anyway due to the suspension getting baggy through age, unless it's been replaced.

The ZXR is a nice powerful bike which I actually found pretty comfy once out of town. They do look good too, in a retro sort of way.

Downsides are weight as already mentioned and high fuel consumption. The H models also have a daft top-end design that means you have to remove the camshafts to do the valve clearances. This makes it a time-consuming pain in the arse so it's often not done.

My 6R-F was comfortable for distance runs; quite frequently got 140-150 miles to the tank on motorways. You needed to muscle the bike around a bit because it's neutral handling, but it's a good first big bike, very sure footed and forgiving; nowhere near as flighty as the blade! If they made modern 600's like them, i'd definitely buy one. Buy on condition rather than age. Check if your bike has a sorted shock & stainless steel pipes - this applies to ALL of your choices since in most cases the mild steel pipes would have rotted through and your shocks would have sagged!

My 6R was well sorted and it was a shame to let her go, but I fancied something newer and more "bling"

I paid £950 for my 2000 CBR 600.

Although granted she's battered and has a squillion miles, but it handles amazingly.

You won't get much of a modern sportsbike for under £1k.

You might get an F model ZX6r, or an FZR600 or something like that.
Raise it to £1500 and you might get a J model ZX6r, or an SRAD, or thundercat or something.

I dont think the handling is that neutral, and I've definitely had some seriously scary times on the G2 when pushing it a bit hard. However, might I ask, did you always have a 60 profile on the front tyre Titz? Because I've discovered that a 70 profile does the bike wonders, turns in quicker and sticks to a line more easily.

Also, I went for something more bling also, an '04 Speed Four Laughing *shakes head* No idea what I was thinking. (Not a slight against Speed Fours. Cracking bikes. Its just not exactly an "upgrade" (although FI is nice))

Then promptly broke the bastard. Crying or Very sad

If you can find a cheap FZR1000 then check the exhaust carefully because finding replacement downpipes and Exup housings is nearly impossible.

But I suspect insurance would be too much.

It's not a 600, but there's a guy on another forum I visit selling a 400 that looks to be in good condition with lots of work done to it:

https://www.xrv.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=34793

only slightly over £1000 (and maybe he would accept an offer if you asked).

I don't know about those sorts of bikes, but might be worth a look at least.

Reckon I'm gonna try and go for a ZXR750. I do love Kawasaki's, and it's a cool looking bike which sounds to be good for it's age.

Cheers for the link on the 400 but I want something 600+ really.

Nice one guys Thumbs Up
