cbr400rr not running right!

the other day i was riding and i herd a quite a fat clicking noise. then after that the bike runs like crap, its very spluttery and doesnt run very well at all. i origanly though it was one of the plugs broken down, just checked the leads and took it for a spin.
i pressed the igniton switch and nothing happend, then after a few presses it started, i went out for a quick spins and it was still spluttery. when i got back i switched the ignition off then on again and my fuel pump just keeps buzzing. is it shot?

Sounds like you've ran out of fuel,reserve tap?

CBR 400's don't have a fuel pump. They are vacuum fed to the carbs.

Buy a brand new solid state replacement pump from xrv.org.uk or look for Facet on Ebay. When I got mine it cost about £35-£40.

The Honda originals which are actually made by Mitsubishi have got contact breakers under the plastic endcovers and they weld themselves shut. I've had 3 genuine Honda types plus a CBR6 one 2nd hand and they all failed after about 40,000 miles, though the last new one only lasted 20,000 miles before giving up the ghost.

25,000 miles up on my Facet so far with no problems and CBR600 fuel pumps are the standard secondhand replacement for AT owners so good chance it should work if it's also the same pump on the 400.

well the clicking noise sounded like a quiet ticking, like the sound of electirc when it conducts to something.
when i hit the starter button, nothing happend a couple of times, the engine didnt tyurn over, not starter or anything,
and its spluttery at low revs up to about 8 grand, but even then it feels like its holding back unless you give it a hand full of throttle then it goes somewhere.
the bike cut out this morning on the way to work. when i pulled over, switched the ignition off then on again, the fuel pump was buzzing again. so i switched it of again then on, and it was still buzzing, and i could smell fuel and the bike was not starting, so i think it mite have been flooding the engine. so i switched the ignition of, waited of few minutes, then hit the starter as soon as i turned the ignition on again before it had a chance to flood and it started. so i splutterd to work. lol. i have noticed that its bad when i first start it in the morning but after about 10 mins of travelling it gets worse. maybe something is breaking down under tension?
ive took the inline filter off from the tank to the pump, and just put a few hose dirrectly to the pump but this has not solved the problem.

im having problems charging the battery too, i think the regulator has gone.

now, is the speedo on thes bikes somehow linked to the ignition? i know they are restricted by this. the things is, when i bought the bike last week the speedo needle wasnt goin past 40 mph even though i was well above that.
funny things is, now the needle doesnt move at all, and im having all these issues with poor running and everything.
could the fact that this speedo isnt working be the cause for my bike not fireing properly????

The pump ticks like that when you run out of fuel - i wonder if you've either got an air-lock in the fuel pipes, or it's sucking in air from one of the connections?

i dnt think im getting air through the connections on the hose from the tap bcuz its tight a feck, i had reet squeez it on. i tried staring the bike with the filler cap open but it turned over but tdidnt start. then the battery died lol, got it on charge now. how do u get and air lock in your fuel system?

yeah very much so, just squirted all over my hand. lol when i went to the petrol station earlier i listen for a hiss when i opened the filler cap but it didnt hiss.

Yup, that's the infamous Mitsubishi shit pump. I wonder if it's the early type or the improved version that still breaks. The main difference being the inlet and outlet pipes are reversed which means you need to know if swapping from one pump to a nother.

Hello, i have just bought a cbr 400. after 7000 Rpm it feels like clutch slip, but it eventually pulls through. it feels like it could be fuel starvation, possibly. i have cleaned the carbs and the fuel is clean. Does the speedo cable link to the restriction system?. mine does not have one fitted. Thanks.

they do have a restriction which if buggered about will kill 2 spark plug to cease firing after 5,500 rpm. Check plugs first, but as for the slipping this could well be clutch related
