was going to get a separate back protector, but browsing eBay I found this replacement armour for your leathers.

little did I know that when taking the original "armour" out, that it isn't armour at all, it's piddly little piece of foam which just seems for demonstration purposes rather than to protect you.

comes with back, shoulder, and elbow, and made by the well know Knox people.

these will replace any stock stuff in your leathers, mine was an RSV jacket and the "armour" was replaceable by undoing the little velcro pockets inside.

Tis good stuff the Knox. I used the exact same protector when I superman'd down the road then landed on my back half on half off the curb. Only down side would be it doesnt cover your tail bone and OMG that hurts when you bruise it. You're arse goes numb for ages when your stuck in bed.

I now where one from hg which as a foamy bit to over your tail bone and its attached to me not in my jacket. I have another one of the knox in the wardrobe if anyone wants it. Tis new and not used (bought it to replace the other one then bought the hg one)

Looks like CE body armour to me. Most body armour is nothing more than a bit of foam anyway.

The stuff you just bought is just a fancy looking bit of foam. The plastic on the outside is to stop the foam being damaged, it will do exactly squat in terms of absorbing the energy from an impact.

Same way as a motorbike helmet is just a glorified bit of expanded polystyrene. They harp on about the shell materials but that is just there to hold the polystyrene in place.

I have it on good authority that a Marks and Spencer cheese sandwich absorbs sufficient impact energy to pass the requirements of the CE body armour standard.

But if the shell doesn't last the polystyrene wont last and the whole operation is pointless.

I had the same thing N30, just got my dad to bring up the back protector from my old jacket, was a right pig trying to get it in but still feels better than the flimsy foam that was in there before.

Rubbish polystyrene or not , they still act as an excellent barrier between you and the road.

In that my 105mph face down slide would have been terribly messy had I not had a helmet on,

I've seen a particularly gory picture in various places (similar in nature to, say, rotten dot com, if that place is still around ? ) of a face, or rather, half a face, of an allegedly Aussie guy who came off wearing an open face helmet. Got no jaw basically, lots of claret, and you can see his teeth here and there, but not much of a jaw left. Made me much more interested in wearing of a full face helmet. It always amazes me that he appears to be still alive.

Anyone else took the original back ''foam'' out of their leathers if they have a back protector?

Makes a big difference if one has over-eaten during winter and neglected the exercise
