My gs125 engine was low on fuel (ive only just got it) and i got the fuel home, filled it up and it was fine, that was until...for a few seconds i tried revving the engine quite hard (about 8k revs, redline is 10k) and steam (didn't seem like smoke..but maybe) was coming out of the engine...is that normal?

another thing is, this was all in neutral..and when i revved it to about 6k, the engine stayed at 6k, it didnt go back to 1500k like it should? is this all happening just because I did it in neutral? i\ll be able to take it out on the road tomorrow..but until then just worried it wont work..

If you keep starting it every 5 minutes next thing is your battery will be flat too.

Stop starting it, leave it till you can ride on the road and THEN start it, let it warm up, adjust the idle when warm if neccessary, ride it then see what its like after a hundred miles or so

I'm no expert but my nsr done this and I had to adjust the mixture screw. Should be on the Carburator under the tank. Don't ask me where... I think Keith has a detailed post about carbs somewhere in the articles section.

Does it idle at 1700 when you have the choke out?

It sounds like the normal difference you get with a choke and without to me...

Hi

Don't keep starting the bike, and certainly don't rev it to 10000rpm when cold. Using the choke to much will wash the oil off the bore causing loads of extra wear, and also plenty of that fuel will find its way down to the oil and dilute it (and petrol is a lousy lubricant).

The idling problem might be the choke, but could also be an air leak after the carb (not that uncommon if you have a rubber manifold linking the carb to the engine), a sticking carb slide (but then it would probably idle at a lot higher revs), and could also be a badly routed / sticking throttle cable (when running do the revs go up and down as you turn the handlebars without touching the throttle, as if so the throttle cable is wrongly routed).

All the best

Keith

okay, i tapped the choke on, then switch it back off and it seems fine, because im guessing i just didnt have it all the way off, i also found the engine idle thingy on the carb and adjusted it so it idles at 1500rpm, is that an okay rpm?

the only thing im a little worried about was the steam (well there was a heat blur) coming off the engine and it was very hot, im guessing this is normal, but as this is my first bike..

Hi

That is probably still a bit high for the idle, but not too far out (I would guess at 1200rpm for it).

Revving to 10000rpm, or even 6000rpm for a while with no air flow around the engine to cool it down will mean it will get very hot very quickly.

All the best

Keith

ah okay, it seems to be fine now so i wont start it again til i take it out for a long ride tomorrow..(hopefully)

one thing I did notice was when opening the choke now ve filled it up with fuel, the engine just stalls, is that where its got enough fuel and its flooding?

If the bike is running fine and idling fine then you have NO reason to put the choke on, so don't use the choke unless you can't get the bike started in the mornings without it.
