I am a final year student at Loughborough University studying ergonomics. For my final year project I am looking
into the different control systems for motorcycle indicators (1, 2 or 3 button systems) and which is the most effective
design, as this has been a hotly debated subject with BMW using the 3 button system and Harley Davidson using the
two button system. Below is a quick questionnaire that would help me greatly if you could answer and send the answers
back to hugd2@lboro.ac.uk or just reply on the forum. You will remain completely anonymous through this process and
will be given a participant number for the investigation instead of using your real name.
Thank you for your time

1. What make and model of motorcycle do you own / use?

2. Is the motorcycle your primary for of transport?

3. How long do you ride a motorcycle for per week? (in hours)

4. How long have you been riding a motorbike for? (years and months)
Years months

5. Does the motorcycle you own / use have the 1, 2 or 3 button control system to operate the indicators?

6. Have you have any other experience with any of the other control systems for motorcycle indicators,
if so which system? ( if no then move to question number 8 )

7. If so which system did you prefer, and give an explanation for your answer.

8. List 3 positive points about the control system you use.

Could you just clarify what th edifferent systems are. I'm assuming the modern jap bike system of flick l/r to indicate and push to cancel is 1 button.

Also what about the old style jap one, where you have to get it back into the middle to cancel.

The 1 button system has one button on the left clip that you move left to go left right to go right and push in to cancel the indicators
The 2 button system has one button on the left clip to go left and one on the right to go right, you press the button once to activate it and then a second time to cancel it.
The 3 button system has either one button on the left and two on the right, or two on the left and one on the right, with seperate buttons to activate and cancel the indicators. hope this helps

you missed the indicators on the SR125 whereby you push to signal on a single switch the direction you want , but then move it back to the middle to cancel it.

Also a well dodgy system I saw on a few bikes which auto cancel.

Suzuki GS125

Yes

9 hours

3 years (mostly off road)

1 button system, no push to cancel

I have used 1 button and 3 button systems.

Preferred 1 button because it was easier to use and didn't have to check it was back in the middle, just click it in.

1. it works
2. its simple
3. controls my high/low beam aswell.

1. can't push to cancel
2. occasionally slip and go striahgt from indicating left to indicating right.
3. have to check its in the middle

One button and self cancelling..like my 1988 TZR250
My 07 honda is push to cancel and I forget...all the bleeding time
Anymore than one button is over complicating it.
Sorry not to answer all the other questions

Mate,

Come over to the LSUMCC AGM this thursday at 7PM if you're not in the bike club yet. I've got a few questionnaires that i'm planning to dish out to the members on behalf of my mates.

Get yerself on the LSUMCC facebook group too.

You'll probably hear/see me riding a 929 fireblade like a complete nobend around campus because people just don't expect a guy to filter.

Wot u ride anyway?

8 Years 6 months

5. Does the motorcycle you own / use have the 1, 2 or 3 button control system to operate the indicators?

if so which system? ( if no then move to question number 8 )

All been a variation on the same theme (love Honda)

Forgive me for being cynical but could this person have possibly deliberately chosen a username that is similar to an existing member so as to not be bombarded with 'Spam' ratings? Question

Dunno mate, there's a LOT of lufbra students knocking about that need to do their research/surveys for their disertation?

If he's a finallist, chances are, like me, they're born in 87 Wink

That said, i've been blabbering about BCF to the guys at the uni bike club for quite some time too though.
