Panic #2
I have a Saracen Xile, ive fitted new bits left right and center and never realy had a problem, however now i have met my match.
I bought some downhill rims a while ago, with disc brakes mounted to the hubs allready, as i wanted to convert my v - brakes to discs.
So the wheels are in, nice and simple, happy days.
I have a caliper that i borrowed from someone at work, however the caliper wont mount perfectly flush to my frame (only tried the rear brake so far), and the disc wont fit into it - eg it hits the top of the calliper before the axel is seated where it should be.
Ive done a bit of internet looking and i am now totaly confused about what i imagined to be a very simple subject.
So - basically, what on earth do i need now to get disc brakes onto my bike? Its a saracen xile, with i think 160/165mm discs on the rims.
thanks! ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

You need smaller discs by the sounds of it. Either that or fabricate an adapter that seats the caliper further out, you should easily be able to make one. ____________________ 2012 KTM EXC 250

Also don't even bother with cable operated discs (doubt you are) but a decent V-Brake setup will out perform them. ____________________ 2012 KTM EXC 250

You'll need an adapting mount, though chances are the rotors aren't right for the calipers anyway so you'll have funny things going on when you come to put brake pads in and use them. It's for this reason calipers and rotors are normally bought as a set, if you buy a complete disc brake it will come with a rotor and everything. For what it's worth I'd just buy a second hand set of Hope Minis or similar and be done with it. |

Ive actually taken a punt on a set from ebay, to see if they work or not.
The callipers are for the same size disc as mine, so we will see if they work - if not, then i have the full set to just put onto my wheels.
However, i dont even know if that will work!
Seriously, motorbikes / cars - Fine! Give me a push bike, im lost!
I've got to put a new crankset in before the 6th March - how on earth am i going to manage that! ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...
