Right, looking to rent asap. Have a location, have a realistic budget etc.

My main question is am I able to rent with a group of students as someone who is working full time? I have a feeling there may be restrictions for this to happen, but having the option of living with students would save me a hell of a lot of money and widen my quality of property vastly.

Thanks for any help.

Assuming you can actually tolerate living with students.

Going by another current thread, sounds like its quite easy for you to get stuffed for the entire council tax bill, which could put paid to any plans of making it affordable.

You get made liable for all the council tax....

Unless you can arrange with the students living there a sort of I don't officially live here sort of agreement or just don't tell them about it and have your name on none of the electricity , gas , internet , phone etc.

And for your employer give him your parents address for pay slips warning letters and such like.

I'd probably expect the students to ask you to pay for council tax although i think there is a 25% discount if you have students living in the property (100% if all tenants are students). To be honest though the majority of student properties are dumps, furnished and maintained as cheap as possible due to students moving on fairly quickly.

So basically there are ways around it, what are the legal ramifications should it be found out that I am using the system to the best of my abilities? Also what is the average for council tax, I dont understand the whole banding system but am of the beleif around £1000 a year is the average for council tax?

Regarding students I have lived with some before (not in the UK) so know what they are like, and due to spending little time where I live I may as well broaden my options.

EDIT: Tatters pretty much answered my question, thanks. Smile

You might be hard pushed to find some students willing to lie to the council for you. They currently get it free so there's nothing in it for them to lie to the council (putting their necks on the line presumably) and not put your name forward for council tax.

One of my current flatmates was going to live in a house of 4 next year with one person a non-student and were told by Avon council they would be liable for 75% of the total cost.

Its stupid but if you can get some students to play along itll be fine.

Im on my second year of living in student house and this year we did have to fill out a form to get exempt from council tax but was never checked so reckon you could get away with it Thumbs Up

Think on this. You're a working man - a professional. You've got an important meeting tomorrow at 8am with a Japanese businessman. If you can swing the deal you'll also get that fat promotion you've been after. Its essential you make a good impression.

Your housemates decide to hold an impromptu wild houseparty and noisily enter your bedroom at four am at which time one is sick down your brand new suit and the only clean shirt in the house.

You arrive at work covered in puke and with beer oozing out of your shoes as your housemates thought it was funny to pour beer into them during the party. You get out of your car and its raining. Not wanting to compound the existing issues, you reach for your coat. You pull it on and get out of the car. You pull up your hood only to find it was full of baked beans. Your immaculate hair is now drenched in cold beans and you're covered in puke. You go into the office and are immediately dismissed for your appearance.

So you live in the gutter outside the student digs. On top of which, all of the bills were in your name so bailifs come and reposess your cardboard box and your puke stained suit and and staple a gas bill to your naked arse.

All because you wanted to save a few quid by living with a load of soap dodging students.

I live with students in student accommodation and its awesome. I have to be up at 7 in the morning and don't finish till 9 at night. I get enough sleep and if i want to party or go out or mess around then its all there to take or leave. It's good fun i would recommend it, and to make it better i don't pay a penny. Wink
