my house in on a corner and near it is a set of bollards across the road to stop people using it as a rat run. There are no no entry signs or kerbs if the bollards where on there the road would be normal road. I regularly cut through as it is quicker. the problem with this is people never check from the direction of the bollards and I have been nearly twatted a couple of times for cars pulling out of there drives and such even with me going slow through it.

Is there any reason I should be cutting through there?

My guess is that the bollards are there to make this a dead end road and as such it's no longer a valid route. Using it on the bike, as you can squeeze through is probably not permitted, however if there is no obvious dead end sign or no entry sign I'm not sure how you'd get on in an accident.

Personally I'm not surprised you've not been seen, let's face it most car drivers don't see bikes on the road! If I was you, I'd be very, very careful, as I think you'd be in trouble in the event of an accident.

Go careful - you're nearly home anyway!! Laughing

A line of bollards do not a road closure make.

To make it illegal to pass through them on your bike it would need a legal traffic order and the appropriate signs, usually a red ring (no vehicles, that includes pushbikes unless being pushed) or a red ring with a motorbike being Evel Kneiveled over a car's roof in the centre.

Of course that's assuming it's a public road. You can do pretty much what you like on a private or council estate road.

unless theres the old round sign with red borders showing a bike and/or car within (i.e. the vehicle prohibited sign) its perfectly fine to use the road.

and i would say either way, if anyone hit you because they didnt look its still on them as whether you 'should' be coming out of that road or not they are still meant to make sure the way is clear before proceeding.

Take a real picture, depends on local signage and whether they've used a rasied pavement etc to block it.

There is no sings and the road is not raised. Imagine a normal local street with 5 3 feet high bollards in it. More than enough room to fit a bike through.

Well considering that the road is blocked off to traffic, most people won't look.....

But they still should, as there could be a pedestrian or a cyclist coming from that direction.
In your situation, when cutting through that "Rat Run" i would continue down the road with great care.

If they hit you then they would be at fault..... Not that its of much use when your bike is a mangled mess on the floor.

You could tackle the local council on the bollards, as its possible that they are not legal.

TBH I am quite happy they are there it cuts down on traffic outside my house and makes things safer (there are lots of kids about) There are also 2 schools either end of the bollards which means school traffic would be horrendous. I am always carefull through there the thing that sparked the thread was some dozy bird that came flying out of her drive and even when I hit my horn she still didn't realise where I was.
