As the title says really.

Took the Tenere in for its 600 mile service on Wednesday.

Picked it up that evening, with a bill for £170! Looking at the invoice, they used, oil, filter, a gasket and some lube.

What I found extortion was the £75 p/h labour charge! It's not even that expensive at the BMW dealership! Not to mention, a 90 minute service, what did they do? Get a kid to service it? Even *I* can change the oil on a bike quicker than that! lol

Anyway, rant over. Whats the deal with warranties for motorbikes?

Do I *have* to take it to an authorised Yamaha dealer to keep the warranty? Or will a reputabe garage who stamp the book acceptable?

Cheers,

Lewis

I'm pretty sure you can get it stamped by any garage now, or something like that.

Hang on, you didn't get your first service labour free? I have never known the first service on a new bike to have a labour cost.

You will have to read the warranty to be sure of what dealer you have to take it to.

You have me worried a little now as I have taken my R1 for the 2nd service to a non Yamaha dealership. I will check this out tonight I think.

I know I can take my car to an independent garage for the service. Just wasn't sure if this was something the car industry and done to try and boost sales.

I suspect the service would have been free, but I bought the bike up in Newcastle as it was such a good price. Saved £1,200 on the list price.

Will be taking it to a guy some of the London IAM guys use. Dave Wilkins I think?

The first free warranties are a thing of the past with most places now. Even then it was only if you went back to the place the bike was purchased from to start with.

You don't have to go to a main dealer for servicing as long as it is carried out to the makers mileage/time periods and approved parts are used.

Oh and LH-ER5 where is the BMW dealer that charges less than £75/hr? They were at that 4 years ago. Wink

You can do your own servicing and keep the warranty in tact. You don't even have to use genuine parts, as long as the parts are up to the same standard and at the recommended time frame/millage.

Really? Both my friend who bought a new SV650 and my mum who bought a GSXR1000 from different dealerships over the weekend got their first service labour free. I thought the manufacturers paid for the labour? Are they stopping this then? Would be a shame.

LH-ER5, great saving on the bike by the way, definitely worth a trip to toon town for it. Thumbs Up

I'm amazed that anyone would buy a bike without enquiring about servicing costs and intervals, it's pretty basic stuff.

LH-ER5 wrote:
...what did they do?

There may be something in your handbook or service book that details what is required at each service. Some garages will give you a check sheet stating items covered. Again, why not ask them?

BTW 75 p/h is quite high but not extortionate.

Call Yamaha up and complain about the charge for a 1st service.... They may well comeback and say it should only be a fixed price.

Also its not just a oil change, they should have checked all nuts and bolts to make sure they are still tight...

You havn't used a BMW dealership recently have you.

£80 PH in Dorchester and Bristol for bikes, over £100 for BMW car dealerships Shocked

I would say that £75 ph is quite dear for Yamaha, you do have a choice where you take it for servicing in exactly the same way as you had a choice to travel to buy the bike. Wink

First service on the KTM was £300 or so Thumbs Down... however they do check the valves then, but still. If I'd taken it back to where I got it from (About an hour and a half's drive away at least) I'd have got it for half price or something. Woo.

Someone was telling me that they were charged for their first service on a Fireblade this week.

He rang Honda UK who said that the first service is no longer free as from 1st Jan 2009.

My Suzuki I picked up in December would have had free servicing, pay for parts. Instead I got the parts free and I did it myself instead.

Had it a month, hardly worked though as not been to well so it's only got about 2k on the clock now. Hopefully back full time next week so the mileage should go through the roof.

Metropolis in Vauxhall?,

They are terrible, The only thing i use them for are kawasaki spares and maybe their gear/lids, Sales/servicing i have heard nothing but bad things and when you go in there you can see the attitude people talk about, have a quick glance at some of these londonbiker threads:

https://londonbikers.com/forums/Topic261020-50-1.aspx
https://londonbikers.com/forums/Topic179869-50-1.aspx

If you search there are more complaints...

My Busa first service was labour free if I took it back to George Whites. I was told that if I took it to any other Suzy dealer I'd have to pay labour charges so I'm not sure if thats a Suzuki policy or just George Whites being nice.

I never take any bike to a dealer for services. I can understand if a person hasn't the mechanical aptitude to service their own bike - no shame in that - but what I struggle with is those who use the argument that they if have the bike dealer-serviced it will be worth more when they come to sell it. This is the daftest reason IMO because the cost of dealer servicing will far-outweigh any theoretical gains when it's time to sell. Having a dealer-serviced bike will be a buying-point for very few people and most will make a decision based on condition, mileage and age before service history.
