Got a welder from the auctions a little while back for £30 Cool so decided to buy something to practise on:

Got it for £200 quid as it failed on a little bit of welding.

Needs a little patch on both side where the floof meets the baulkhead.:

Made a start on welding a plate in,but it's a new welder which iv'e never used before so this should explain why my welding looks so sh!t Embarassed It'll get better as i go i hope,but either way it'll be good enough to get it through the mot.

Only spent an hour on it so far,but i'll update with more pics as i go if anyone's interested.

Cool little jeep innit Laughing . The women i bought it off payed £1000 for the alloys then another £150 for the big arches to cover 'em.
The pics dont really show how wide the wheels are but believe me there bloody big.

It is a girly car no doubt about it.
But i'm not keeping it Very Happy it's just to do up and sell on.
It'll stand me £350 with 12months mot and 6months tax so i should make a nice little proffit. (unless i do decide to keep it Laughing )

i may be wrong but im pretty sure all welding has to be done on the outside for mot ie underneath

I'm replacing the metal that i cut out,(not just patching plates over)so when this is finished it wont look like it's been welded.
Then i'll underseal the full floor so it'll look like new Wink

from the picture i'd say you were holding the arc rod too far away from the weld, thats why youve got so much splatter around the welds.

i'd say the voltage was way too low. theres no penitration there. up the voltage 2 notches on the fine adjustment, VERY slightly on the wire feed then try again, as too much wire causes splatter too.

the splatter i would say is caused by the wire you're using.
im assuming you didnt pay £30 for a gas welder, and you're using gasless MIG, meaning a flux cored wire which causes more splatter than normal and a messier weld.

experiment on a bit of scrap first.

saying all that, the pictures arent exactly clear, so i could be talking out of my arse.

I doesn't look like it to be honest. The weld has to be continuous all the way around the patch in order to be good enough for MOT. You can't just tack it like you've done.

I must admit I do quite like the old Vitaras.

The penetration is there,and i've been hitting it with a hammer to make sure it doesn't move.It's solid.
Yup it is a gas-less welder.
It only has a high~low switch and a dial for the wire speed (cheapo hobby welder)

The splatter i'm not bothered about 'cos i'm grinding all the welds flat as i go.I'll get a few more pics up soon (passenger side is almost done now)

I haven't just tacked it,it's a weld all the way round.
I grinded back all the welds so the plate is flush with the rest of the floor and you cant see the welds anymore.

You'll see the final pics when i'm done and i guarantee you wont know where it's been welded Wink

EDIT:
The pics only show tack welds as that was just to hold the plate in place so i could seam the whole lot Thumbs Up

Gonna start on the car again tomorrow as i'm still finishing the inside of my shed (work benches e.t.c.) and i spent today making a 2-1 exhaust piece for my bike so i can fit a single sporty can and get rid of the ugly-heavy standard exhausts...

I guarentee you that you will, for a start the plate is flat and not "shaped" (pressed) like the floor panel. Aswell as the curves etc in the wheel arch. I admin it will defo do the job and should no problems pass an mot, but it will by no means be an"invisable fix"


I remember years ago getting an old morris marina thru its mot with a tube of chemical metal a metal plate and a boot lace hehehehe

Yes it will be actually.

The floor bit that i cut out wasn't (shaped) pressed,apart from the tiny bit you can see coming down the baulkhead.

I'll take a pic of it when i'm finished without the underseal (just a flash of grey primer) and i bet you cant see the welds or the plate.

I'll even take a pic of the drivers side to prove that area of the floor wasn't pressed.

On a different note,my link pipe is now all tacked in place.Just got to take it off and seam weld it and jobs a good 'un Cool

I'm more bothered about my exhaust than i am about the vitara Very Happy priorities Thumbs Up
