WTF parking tickers for bikes

I live near Crewe and had to go into town yesterday. Parked my bike in the bike bit and what do I see, they have concreted in some sort of ticket holder thing. Basically a little display case with a huge ring to put a chain through.

I don't carry a chain or anything secure like that with me. They expect me to put my ticket in that and leave it?? I suppose its so they can make an extra 70p out of us bikers who did not pay before.

Is this normal?
What do I do if my tickets gets nicked?
I actually spoke to the parking attendant and said, ive bought a ticket, if its nicked its not my fault.

Were meant to pay in the car parks in cornwall but we dont. I cant see why we have to pay we dont take much room up. They just wont the money

Just argue that the wind blew it away or it got nicked.

have to be quite a long chain to fit through that and still go through a point on your bike

Erm , the government is utterly bankrupt they need to do this to get money out of you, me I just park a bit farther away out of town and walk in if they do things like that OR completely avoid that town all together.

Bury tickets bikes parked anywhere and has nowhere specifically to park bikes, so I just don't go to Bury at all and go to Bolton where parking is free. If Bolton decide to do it I will avoid bolton.

The council are in effect killing the golden egg laying goose.

Thing is, it would have cost the concil probably a couple of hundred at least with labour, fuel, tools, and the cost of the actual thing which is solid thick stainless steel!

about a year ago the car park i used everyday decided to remove the motorbike bay and put ticket machines in its place.

So i rang up the local council to say now were can i safely park my motorbike & will it cost me?

They replied
1.you may use a car space if you pay for a ticket to use it.
2.Parking is free for motorbikes as long as its not double yellow lines etc.

So i still assumed until today that you can park for free unless its a car space.

These local authorities are really staring to take the piss, and to my mind proves that they don't take the whole "reduce congestion, reduce emmissions" thing seriously.

I could understand if they still ran the local public transport (i.e. buses) that they might have a motive, but this just smacks of stupidity.

Some interesting points, my bike returns 48mpg at 90mph on the motorway (find me a car that'll do 0-60 in 3 secs that can do that), if I ride at 70mph or pootle around town I'll get 50mpg (find me a petrol car on a proven combined cycle that can do that).

None of my journeys involve sitting in heavy traffic burning fuel without moving very far for 10-20 mins at a time (I filter past literally hundreds that are).

My commute involves dropping my daughter off at school first, 90+% of the cars on the road are single occupancy.

If I used a car on my commute or shopping in town my carbon footprint would be 2-3 times larger.

EDIT: forgot the servicing: front tyres 11,000 miles, rear tyres 8,000 miles full set = £200 (full set for my wife's car £370 for budget brand Barums, Michelin £100+ each)

I only chucked that post in a stop and think about what you are saying type post, I honestly dont think that biking as any more green than driving an economical car.

For example a few weeks ago we had a hire car in work, it was an deisel astra sporty model 150 BHP apparently, 4 blokes traveled across britain in it over a couple of days and when we got back to Bristol I did the maths and it worked out to return 53MPG and it was getting pretty thrashed.

I honestly dont believe a v strom will do 0-60 in 3 secs either, I think my Tuono would be strugling to do that

I suspect these bike parking posts are down to some car drivers moaning about having to pay when bikes don't

Talking about parking spaces for bikes, I was told a few years back by a traffic warden that as long as it's not causing an obstruction to pedestrians, you can park on the pavement. I do this regularly when using the bank and have never got done - touch wood.

We have these in Leicester, it's a choice to use them. If you want to use the chain then you have to buy a ticket.

Don't want to buy a ticket then don't use the chain. Should be a sign nearby explaining it.

They do this at Helmsley as well

the council know its a hot spot for bikers so they changed their ticket machines, bikers now get to press a magic button that prints 2 tickets so if the one for the bike gets nicked you still have proof

Well it said in bold letters, place ticket in here and there was a parking attendant nearby (which I spoke to) so couldn't really get out of it. Don't wanna get caught atm

where in crewe is this? i live nr there and usually park on the old square..
