Following from my thread to Auntie BCF, are you happy with your job and how it affects yuor life.

If you are unemployed (like me at the moment) just answer as if you were at your last job. This does not apply to students sorry

By "truly happy" and "unhappy" I mean with the way you work and feel about your work.

Firstly there are shades of grey in happiness you know ...

But there are also several big sectors of employment status you have left out ('other way' is too broad to meaningfully reflect all these big sectors) ...

Part-Time
Flexi-Time
Jobs with base time but the people rely on the overtime
Full time, but no set hours (not all full time is 9-5).

There are also the unemployed ...

And for people like me ... the retired!!

Oh and being retired is fecking great, highly recommend it!!!

Hi Allymoss, like wotsizface said the poll won't really work.

But i can tell you how jobs have affected my life.
I purposely changed jobs which meant a reduction in wages. I needed more 'me time' and a job that wouldn't wreck my body so much...that was 12yrs ago. I'm still with the same company and asmuch as i'd give up work at the drop of a hat, i'm relatively happy in my work. But most importantly, i'm very very happy in my home life, even with all the hassles that can bring! I don't have to work weekends, i get 30days plus B.H's, pension (FWIW) H&S is excellent.
i could have a crap job and earn big dollar, but life is for living and not working
And to all those people who live to work..i salute you...it's something i've not found yet.

Happy, but would trade it in for a 9-5 easily.

Pays the bills though and for 98% of the time i do my own thing.

I think there are generally two types of people - those happiest with a vocation, that is a career that they truely love and is woven through their personal life (such as armed forces, sporting career etc) and those like me who are happy working a job simply to pay the bills, and keep their leisure time totally separate.

I like to keep a clear line between work and play, I rarely think about work when I'm not there. I don't socialise with colleagues.

Also my office job is just challenging enough to not bore me to death, I don't think I could handle a factory type job as well.

I currently work 8-6, but usually end up staying later. My job is based in the middle of nowhere, not even a pub in my village. Job is relatively fulfilling, but I'm based miles from friends, and family. I work in a narrow sector and getting a job back where my links are is proving hard.

Still, I'm employed and earn enough to keep the bike on the road, so can't complain

I actually enjoy my job at the moment VERY much.
Been doing it (9-5) for about six weeks now.

The subject (occupational and environmental "allergies") is remarkably interesting.

If I could do it from home, I would be entirely happy for quite a long time. But I quite like even going into the office, cos its on the Kings Road, so lots of nice shops.

But its only a temporary job, the "real" secretary will probably be back in a few weeks

I don't know what I will be doing after that.

Kitchen assistant. I'm training to be a chef. I love the work I do. It can be very hard, but it's fulfilling and I'm always doing something, which I think is what does it for me as I hate to be standing around. Also I love the feeling I get when people are satisfied with their meal and service. One such time was last year when a family (couple with two young kids) were the last people in on the evening shift and insisted on taking pictures of me with them before they left to put in their holiday album.

However the company I work for I'm not so happy about. It's not big enough to have safeguards and rules put in place to ensure staff are treated fairly, but it's too big to have that personal relationship with your boss that comes from working for a small business. I've been laid off for the last two years in a row after being promised winter work beforehand.

Last year I went back because I love the people I work with. This year I went back because there's not much else out there. They've guaranteed me 16 hours through winter which is great because I can get that topped up with dole, and as above I'm now doing my training, which I'm really looking forward to.

At the moment I'm working Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Which is alright, but it's frustrating as I know through the summer I will be doing 14 hour days with no breaks, six days a week, then come October/November they will more than likely just forget about it and lay me off again .

I work 7.30 to 3.30 5 days a week (mon-fri). My job can be boring, repetitive and soul crushing on a daily basis. Many days are groundhog for sure. There are a few good ones, the people are ok (although there are about 7000 halfwits knocking about all over the site) and we can have a laugh. The odd day I get my teeth into something I do enjoy it. I ended up there by doing an apprenticeship that I didnt really want to do, but wanted to 'not do it' less than going back to school so it was the way to go. Has got me to the point where I work to live and at the tender age of 27 is seeing just about the sunny side of 40k this year. Im due a payrise soon to top that off, for the cash I can put up with it.

I tend to feel that if you enjoy it and are willing to do it for next to nothing then it isnt 'work', I define work as a place you HAVE to go and put up with SHIT the whole time just so you can pick up the CASH at the end of the month

Officially I work a 9-5, but there's so much random overtime these days that it's difficult to give a definate.

Work is nice and varied, the people are good - I couldn't ask for much more really. The days fly by (not enough time in the alloted hours usually, hence the overtime to meet deadlines) so I could be old before I know it. I'm progressing through the ranks nicely though.

Could do with a bit more cash mind.

At the moment my job's taken over my life completely - working evenings, working weekends... and I'm rather perversely enjoying it. I prefer being busy and feeling useful to sitting on my arse doing nowt, and while I'm so stressed out that I've developed a twitchy eye (!) and am drinking a bit too much, its all quite exciting in an odd kind of way. It's new and interesting - we're selling a movie whilst running a tour, and no-one in the team's every done that before so it's all new, all different and that's what you need sometimes to keep things fresh.

I haven't voted on your poll cos it's way too general - while I like my job for the most part, it isn't the all-fulfilling purpose of life nor is it a grim hole that I can't find the will to climb out of. Somedays it's great, some days it's crap, mostly it's just 'ok'. I can think of a lot of worse things to be doing, I can think of better things to be doing. I don't fall into an easy time slot category either, whilst technically I'm 10 - 6 it doesn't really work like that. If things need doing, they get done. If there's nothing to do then I'm off out. It's all about give and take - currently it's manic but I'm looking forward to a relaxed summer.

All in all I wouldn't say my happiness/unhappiness is much related to my work at all - work is the constant, the un/happiness comes from life outside of work.

i work shifts, 7am-1.30pm, 1.15pm-8.15pm, 7am-6.15pm, 7am-8pm, and sometimes 7am-9pm, allso do nights which are 8.30pm untill 7.15am, i do 7 nights on the trot then get 7 days off which rocks. the shifts don't bother me, prefer them than 9-5 but thats the nature of the job, everyday's different.

edit: i also work every other weekend sat and sun 8am-6.15pm. but get lots of rest days in the week.

I enjoy my job, but the travelling is a nightmare. 60 mile round trip along a boring motorway (it's all up and down hill as well, so fuel consumption is sh*t). I am unhappy, not because of the work, but because last year I was told I could work from home (unofficially) since my job doesn't actually require me to be in a specific place. After 3 months, this was stopped without notice, so now I'm back to commuting a 60 mile round-trip. I also don't like the fact that I'm doing quite a lot of work that is far beyond my job description, but am hitting a brick wall when it comes to discussions about a change of job title/salary, etc (this was also supposed to happen last year...)

If I thought for one second that I'd be grinding along like this for the rest of my life I'd put a bullet to my head now (oh sorry, UK, erm... I'd slit my wrists with a plastic spoon ).

As said poll is wank, I work 8 - 4.30 one month and 1.30-10 the next month. Plus I work one weekend on (Sat + Sun), one off... and get wednesdays off (the most useful of offdays obviously ).

I get no job satisfaction, its not convenient, it's hard to get any work done so the day passes slow as hell, breaks are spent with hellish company in an illegally small cupboard... So erm yeh.
