Went out this morning to find the bike wont move.

On wednesday i put it in the garage and the last 2 nights it has been -5 is it possible the water on the discs / pads has frozen sold?

If so how can i free them?

If they were frozen then during the day they would thaw again.

Could be that if you put it away with wet disks, the disks have rusted slightly and binded to the pads, but that's usually only with cast iron disks instead of steel.

You haven't left your disklock on have you? Razz

Just give it a shove. Wink

hi
you could pour warm water over them but doubt there frozen Smile

i would say the salt has done the damage and a clean and service is probably needed if you can remove the caliper bolts and then move the caliper side to side on the disc using a little force you should be able to free the pads.

then give the exsposed dirty pistons a clean with brake cleaner etc Thumbs Up hth

yea the disks would have been soaked , it took two of us to free it in the end its wasnt helped by the fact i had just filled the tank up completely.

But it was the front discs that were jammed solid.

Cheers

Your brakes have seized , strip and rip to get them moving again, of if you are so inclined like me just ride it as normal giving it more revs.

This is risky as:

#1 it can cook off your brake fluid = no brakes

#2 warp your brake discs

#3 eat up a LOT more petrol than normal

#4 your braking ability is compromised as the discs will already be hot even on a very short ride.

i have fixed it now , the bike only just had a service week ago with new pads etc so they should be fine it was a combi or water and grit and the fact it was -5 last night didnt help.

Hi

Pads can seize to the disks and I have had this happen loads of times but as mentioned above normally happens with cast iron disks and certain pads.

Thing to watch for is any marks left on the disk from where the pads stuck. This can result in a load of judder on the brakes (I have a pair of barely used disks for the FZ750 that have suffered like this).

All the best

Keith

Hi

Difficult to say. With the FZ disks I just gave up and bought new ones (would need to get the old ones skimmed to reuse them I think).

All the best

ive heard that if you use a wire brush that it can be quite effective at cleaning them up , removing rust etc.

Hi

If it is just light surface rust then yes, although I would just go for a ride and let that clean up the disks.

All the best

Keith

my front brake was stuck like that the other day, came from with a bit of a shove though and there was a light bit of rust on the disc where the pad had been.

I thought my discs were steel tbh. Confused

Standard Suzuki pads are known for rusting to the disc after being stood-up when wet so that's probably what's happened to your bike. They get a heck of a grip on the disc too and come free with a crack. Also leave a black mark on the disc where they were stuck. Once free they should work just fine. I swapped mine for EBC, then Bendix pads and never suffered the problem again.

I've got EBC HH sintered pads and EBC discs fitted, and they will rust a little and stick to the disc overnight if put away wet.

Bit of a shove and thy come free with a crack. Short ride just wears the surface rust off, sorted. Thumbs Up
