Just bored on a Saturday afternoon when I should be working or tidying the house and I think what bike would be the best in a mad max style dystopian future?
It's have to be capable of off-road, be virtually bullet proof and easy to repair using just a hammer. Speed and grunt may not be incredibly important, but fuel economy probably would. There would obviously need to be quite a few around so you could scavenge parts. Load would be important too, need to carry food, water and a passenger but, not too big that it would be difficult to maneuver.
So, suggestions? ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

They do like 100mpg don't they? I don't think you could fit masses and masses onto it if you were planning to have a passenger, but parts should be easy enough to come by and there isn't a lot to them so there isn't much to go wrong. ____________________ Past: 55 Sym Jet, 91 ZZR250, 03 NSR125R. I think we have found a winner already, the only thing it actually lacks is the cool factor.
You couldnt pull up on it and intimidate anyone thats for sure, which is surely a necessity in the dark future. ____________________ And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

CG - I don't think so, while i said speed may not be important, you will need enough grunt to stay away from men in hockey masks and leather chaps...
Rule clarification - Must be able to cruise (whilst fully laden) at a minimum of 70mph and get to 60 in less than 10s. ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

A good contender, but not quite. Your off road claims are pushing it. Got to really be able to cope with a proper muddy field, not just a bit of slippy grass. ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

DR350, its aircooled rather than liquid cooled, nice and simple.
Id say a CG, and from experience they can handle fairly well offroad with knobblies in a 'really hard to drop' way, but they arent fast enough for the getaway kinda situation.
so my answer, DR350 with a larger tank.
Cheers

Cruise at 90mph +, capable enough to handle it's self in serious terrain (ie managed a Hare and Hounds race). Fast enough (engine and suspension) on the road to get away when needed.
Maintenance actually isn't too bad, though does need to be done every 3000 miles. Fuel economy isn't that good if you're cruising at 90mph with all the boxes on - but same for most things I suspect.
Ideally I'd want a wider ratio gearbox too. |

I'd take my chances and rat the XJR. Goes against your rules but meh.
CB500 with off road tyres? I would've said BMW GS but Ewan f*cked them all the time. |
