Biking Underwear

So, what do you wear underneath your biking gear? Is it what you'd be wearing anyway, something specialised (made with the purpose of wearing on the bike) or something general but which you wear especially to go out on a ride (ie long johns). How effective is it, and are there any drawbacks?

Also, does the season/weather affect what you would wear under your gear, or the length of your journey?

Personally I just wear my normal stuff under my gear, with a loose pair of boxers for comfort in the saddle. If it's cold I'll wear a pair of cotton-lined trackie bottoms underneath my leather trousers. I always wear a textile jacket, so if it's colder I'll wear a warmer and bigger jacket and wear a couple of layers of t-shirts and a jumper underneath, and maybe put on a pair of football socks. If it's really cold or dark I'll put on my hi-vis bomber jacket over the top of all this.

The problem I have is that I get all dressed up to go out on the bike on a cold day and find I'm perfectly comfortable when I'm outside, but if I leave something in the house I get too hot when I go back inside to get it. I also find this a problem if I've stopped off somewhere like a café where I don't really want to mess around getting changed just to go indoors for half an hour then jump on the bike again.

I've not tried biking thermals (eg HG Coolmax, EDZ Innershell) and part of the reason why I'm posting is to see what your experiences are for those of you that have used them, and if that would be any more comfortable and effective than what I've got now.

I have three pairs of boxer shorts that a like to wear under my leathers. I have special socks and a favourite t-shirt. I also get ready in the same order each time. Always get a shower before going for a ride too.

when i'm wearing textiles (usually only in the wet) i'll just wear my clothes nider them - so normally jeans, 2 t-shirts and if its cold, or i'll want it later, a fleece of some sort.

if im wearing leathers then i wear long johns underneath because i find them more comfortable, and for long journeys/ride outs i wear 'proper' bike socks (lidl's ones ) and if its cold and a long ride i wear a lidl thermal long sleeve top and then 2 t-shirts, plus a fleece if its really cold (if its dry i wear a slighlty bigger fleece and on the outside of my leathers so that nothing is a tight fit and i can still move about freely.

I wear boxers. Enough material to keep you warm on a cold day, but also something there for when you sweat on a hot day. I don't like having a sweaty arse crack nor do I like having a cold dick if the wind rushes up my trousers.

In the winter i'll wear EDZ knee cold killers and their yeti neck scarf, along with ski socks, a jumper under my jacket and the detachable thermals that zip into my textiles. Not sexy. I feel the cold No special pants though (i'm hoping that'll win me some credibility back lol)!

In the summer i just wear my normal day to day clothes, plus a Buff with the Powerpuff Girls all over it... There goes my credibility again!

So from reading your replies so far I guess the option for me to take would be to try some proper thermal stuff. I wear a t-shirt under my work polo-shirt at work as I find it keeps me cooler in the kitchen (trainee chef) but also a bit warmer on the bike. Add a jumper underneath a textile jacket and it starts getting a bit constricting - OK when I'm sitting on the bike but I start sweating straight away when I get indoors and much fumbling is involved to get changed once I get to work.

My ride to work is about 5 miles so it's a bit tedious getting all dressed up then waddling to the door to have to reverse the process ten minutes later. I tend to go for a bit of a ride after work so the return journey is more worth the hassle.

Also my old Spada jacket could do with a replacement, it's a bit bulky and cumbersome, I don't think this helps.

ive got a few sets of base layers ffrom sport soccer direct in manchester (on regent rd if anyone knows it) - £6 each for tops and bottoms.
fecking awesome purchase for the money.
dont think id ever fork out £40 + for the shiny edz stuff.

I wear sports boxers; i.e. the ones that reduce sperm count because they cup your gonads so much. That way, your ballsack doesn't dangle about. I then wear Edz leggings because it's more of a tight compression fit and wicks away sweat from leathers. If its really cold, i double up with long johns before I wear jeans/leathers.

For my uppers, same story - EDZ/undermour compression shirt + long sleeve shirt + Tshirt/polo shirt + cold killers windstopper + leathers or jacket (i usually take off the cold killers if i wear my 1 piece because i have my back protector instead). The difference a kidney belt makes when riding in winter is actually noticable.

Normal office stuff as I'm almost certainly riding to work. Which gives a good excuse as to why my pants are crushed... 'it's from the bike pants!'

Saying that, whoever invents the office pants equivalent of Draggin' Jeans will be very rich!

I wear nice underwear that I would not mind a road full of people seeing in the event of an accident, but in the winter I wear a base layer over that. Lidl base layers are great!

Not under-stuff, but I like my roadcrafter one piece. It's an armoured textile suit that can be put on/taken off in under a minute.
Means you're more likely to use it to go to the shops etc and there's no problem taking it off when going into a cafe and the like.
