Why I am boycotting Rainton North services (rant)

This is not a post about the rights and wrongs of removing your helmet prior to paying in a filling station. That topic has been covered in great depth and I feel there is not much more to add to the 400+ posts on the subject in the following thread:

It is however a rant loosely based around the same subject.

I stopped tonight to fill up at the Rainton Service area on the Northbound A1 just after it goes from 3 to 2 lanes at the Dishforth interchange.

I have stopped at this place to fill up numerous times over the last few years (I would guess 30-40 times), never once have I been asked to remove my helmet.

This time, a pudgy bloke in his early 50s with a smug, self riteous expression on his face (think like Harold Bishop off Neighbours) was at the till. He made a "take your lid off" gesture as I walked in that I chose to ignore. He then verbally asked me to remove my helmet. I asked why.

He replied that there was a sign on the door saying it and that this was private property (a debatable point in a service area I'd have said) and he was asking me to. I said that still doesn't explain WHY you want me to remove my helmet other than to be difficult. He replied that it was "standard security procedure" and that in London I wouldn't have got through the door with a helmet on.

I said that we weren't in London and that I had come through the door, the fuel had been dispensed and that I would like to pay for it please. I proferred a £20 note which he refused to take.

I then offered to go back outside and pay at the night window (right next to him). Next thing, the fat, obnoxious prick LOCKED THE FUCKING DOOR using a remote switch.

He then went on about how he'd been a 'bike courier in London for 30 years (fattest fucking motorcycle courier I ever saw) and how he always took his lid off to get fuel.

Being late, and already being in enough of a mood to stick the head on the smug-faced bastard, I opted to not escalate the situation further and removed my lid witht he comment "Nothing quite like a small man with a little bit of power eh?".

He had such an obnoxious look on his face at this point that I was about ready to jump over the counter and lay the bastard out. I restrained myself to dealing out a load of verbal and calling him a fat wanker repeatedly (including in sign language from the forecourt).

He looked indecently pleased with himself throughout.

So. Ordinarily, had I been refused service without removing my helmet, I would have simply added it to the (short) mental list I keep of filling stations I don't use.

The reasons I am recounting this to everyone else are as follows:

1) The fat fuck locked me in. If it weren't so late, this would have resulted in a stand-off, either take the money, call the police or let me out.

2) He clearly set out to rile me. Well he succeeded and I promised I'd tell everyone I could to avoid using his filling station because an obnoxious fat wanker works there.

3) He had such a smug, self-riteous expression on his face that it took all my self control not to slap it round the other side of his head for him. If I don't feel like I have let off steam, I may be tempted to put a brick through the window next time I'm passing.

I think I've been there too , in that they refused to turn the pumps on completely but it was ok as I had a 1/3 of a tank left and on the Africa this was enough to get elsewhere.

Before you boycott the place completly organise a time for you and as many other bikers as possible to turn up for fuel at 5minute intervals, see him refuse that many people and deal with the ensuing carnage...

If it is for age then he shouldn't have authorised the pump to dispence fuel, if it is for his safety then again no authorisation of the pump, you offered payment, thats enough for not wanting to pinch the fuel, the locked door is false imprisonment/ kidnap. You can use reasonable force to escape.

I think a mass visit would be fun.

Wear a full balaclava under your helmet, remove the helmet and say you have complied with the written instructions and now he has forced you to look like a bank robber.

My new plan (I have the row re helmet removal all the time) is to take a camera out of my pocket and take pictures of the cashier in case I need to identify them if they clone my credit card. I mean fairs fair innit, if they want to treat me as a potential criminal I could do the same.

Best way to make a point with these pr1cks is to get as many bikes as possible all at the same time paying for 2 quids worth of petrol with 200 1ps

Even 10 bikes would grind the station to a stop with this prat telling them all to take their lids off and counting 200 pennys a time.

Just make sure they are all legal just in case the cops dont see the funny side although as nothing illegal is happening can't see them getting involved.

Im quite surprised at that, not the arrogant jobsworth demand to remove the helmet but at the false imprisonment, I would have been like a caged animal, pulled all the choccies down and then smashed my way out all the whole screaming "YOU REFUSE TO ACCEPT MY OFFERED PAYMENT"
