Whats the general opinion on refusing the first offer an insurance company makes??

Is it wise to do, and what sort of a difference would it make. I had an accident last year and have just had a settlement figure through of £17,650 which includes personal injury, bike, helmet, gloves, loss of earnings, medication and transport bills etc.

You're unlikely to lose out as far as I know, so worth a try.

it is usually recommended that you accept the 3rd offer.

Depends on the offer. people who say refuse the first never take this into consideration.

I have been paid out £2950 for equipment, minor injury and 4 days off of work in the past. Completely unwarranted amount which would have dropped had it gone to court.

What do your solicitors say about it? I'd say take their advice rather than the advice from BCF where people don't know about the injury, the cost of your bike, loss of earnings, or the other stuff.

What injuries did you suffer? What are their current effects, if any? What is the future prognosis on them?

Ask yourself if it totals up to what you have lost. Also if you are still unsure ask your lawyer. They will be able to tell you straight off.

I got offered a stupidly large sum of money apparently for my injury, so I accepted the first offer.

When I worked for an insurance company (Saga), often, the second offer would be less after we put some "consideration towards it", as we didn't make silly offers like some companies to. Unless the client provided evidence that the offer was small (eg, similar cars found in auto trader for more.)

without knowing the details. i'd total the cost of the bike/repairs against autotrader adverts then add lost earnings, should be easy enough to work out and then everything else. (not personal injury)

subtract that from the offer, this leaves you with an amount that i would say is for personal injury, if you are happy then go for it.

that or get advice from a solicitor Smile

All injuries have a value with an upper and lower score and these are laid down by the Judicial services Review Board. The upper and lower figures have to be used by the Soliciotrs, Insurers and the Courts, but they can look at figures in between.

If you have legal representation, any offer cannot be accepted without first advising you, and they will advise if they think that the offer is reasonable, otherwise they will and should push for a better offer.

Obviously without knowing the extent of the injuries sustained the degree of liability admitted and all the other facts it would be wrong and improper as to whether the amount offered is reasonable.

Suffice to say, sometimes the first offer is the best offer. If proceedings are issued and it goes to Court, the Judge could seriously reduce the amount originally awarded, hence why you need someone qualified to advise you properly.
