In that in my unemployed state I service peoples cars now and again for a bit of extra cash I have the tools so its generally quite easy sparks oil filter, oil etc and can get me a few quid here and there or a case of beer as thanks for what I do...

However what I can't do is get rid of the annoying SERVICE ME messages that almost always appear on the computerised dashboard and I outsource it to a local mechanic.... whom requires a few quid shoved his way.

I usually leave it outside his place and he gets rid of the message, but today he came out and did it while I was sat in the car and it was some sort of fat manual with instructions to use the incar controls to get rid of such messages.

Although I'm not exactly doing 100s or even 10s of cars it seems like a useful manual to have handy.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Get yerself on a decent torrent site and download the Autodata program. It tells you how to reset the service light of most cars (well the ones that can be reset manually, some require a diagnostic tester to clear them).

It also has loads of other service data that will help you out.

+1 on Autodata. Electronics isn't the only thing it can help you with. It's also lists stuff like symptoms and causes, and the time it should take for jobs and how often things should be replaced/checked.

I can also diagnose VAG and BMW cars too.

Must get a copy of this 'Autodata' thing, sounds quite handy! (And expensive if you actually buy it...)

I know how to do the one on 1995-2000 VW Golfs, Polos, Passatts etc.

I'd say your best bet would be a Haynes manual. They tell you how to do all the resistance checks and what order you should do them in (for narrowing it down etc). A bit of Googling should find you a PDF if you don't wanna pay out for the manual.

Old Thread Alert!
