Was it wet roads? or damn conditions,
water in carbs or airbox often makes bikes not start and just keep backfiring.

If it was wet it could also be the coil or the plug cap has got wet and is shorting.

If someone could get some WD40 down to him he could spray the inside of the plug caps and then see if it runs.

Checking then changing the sparkplug would be my first port of call.

Making sure the plug lead is screwed in properly.

If it has points ignition, making sure the points haven't closed up.

Without tools there aint going to be much else he can do at the roadside,

Needs to ideally plug out and check sparks, check fuel on plug, then check the igntion timing as per stinkwheel says.

Silly idea but why not call the RAC/AA get the bike home or somewhere safer to work on it than the hard shoulder of the M25.

Did he manage to get it started in the end?

I suggest not to keep trying with throttle open. Probably flooded (popping noises suggests this)

Check all electrical connections.

Check water reservoir, make sure it hasn't lowered by much

Check underneath engine for any obvious leaks or damage.

Tell him not to go out on a 2-stroke without a spare sparkplug and a plug spanner again. 9/10 times a stroker conks out it is a problem with the plug.

Many of them even have a place to keep one under one of the panels/the seat (the H100 isn't one of them though). The kawasaki triples have spaces under the seat for two sets of spare plugs.
