18 to buy petrol?

I was in a Texaco/Somerfield in Bristol this afternoon and was challenged to be 18. The woman said some new legislation has come out? I asked her about the miniumum age is 16 for mopeds and 17 for everything else and she said the law was the law. Luckily im 19 but it seemed very strange. Is what she said really true?

I think its covering strategy tbh , in that in supermarkets the cashiers ask to cover themselves as they are personally liable if in case they do inadvertantly sell. I don't consider them to be jobs worths if they are under orders to do this.

Myself working in accounts used to have to comply with an enourmous number of anti money laundering procedures which insulted people who had been clients to the firm for 50+ years, the government made my bosses comply , my bosses made me comply.

Poundland has just opened in Banbury, which isn't actually that bad, they do decent name brand stuff really cheap in amongst all the crap.

However I went there the other day and they wouldn't sell my 19 year old mate rizlas because you need to be 21 in there apparently

Also more and more clubs seem to be going 21+, which is wierd because if they don't like the look of you a bit they tell you to fuck off anyways

its Think 21 in most tesco's and I agree with Itchy, when I worked for tesco's the person serving is liable so they are only covering there own backs.

Although in the instance of the petrol the person that served you didn't know what they were on about, and were probably bs'ing

Yep, the cashier can get fined, lose their job and I believe they can get a criminal record as well. It may seem stupid, but I'm sure they don't fancy risking their job for the sake of selling someone glue etc.

Going back 20 years ago, all you did was borrow an elder mates driving license or say you were buying them for your dad. Booze back then was not a problem. The first time I got challenged was my 18th birthday.

im 19 nearly 20 and i was asked for id when buying a dvd with the age rating 15 the other day, this was when i was in motorbike gear wandering round tescos with my helmet.

how many 15 year olds put their bike gear on, ride to the shops and try to buy dvds?

bare in mind trading standards clamp down harshly on people..

I once served a girl.. who bought a drink for herself and her boyfriend ( who was the wrong side of 40).. turned out the girl was 15.. everyone on the bar saw her.. she walked past 2 doormen,, and i took over serving her from the bar manager..

they came in and showed me apicture of somebody dressed to look younger..

now i can tell an 15yr old from an 18yr old..

now thats in the bar i worked in and i got 80 fine and a bollocking off a scared policeman.. ( i was very irate and about twice his size).

In my other job at HMV.. if i sell and 18 to a 17yr old and it goes to Trading standards i get

£5000 fine
6 months prison
lose my job
HMV get a fine
Criminal record..

The latter i already have from the pub incident.. Now most companies have decided.. enough is enough.. and that to cover their employees jobs and their own reputation.. they are to introduce these 21+ and 25+ laws.. they suck the stores know this but they have to do what they have to do.

Pillocks and idiots that buy harmful materials for their kids are to blame but as it always is, the innocent suffer.

I had a similar problem at a texaco garage. Its down my road and I go there all the time, just this time there was someone new behind the counter.

As usual - I ride in, get off, fill up without taking off my helmet (they used to ask me because they do get alot of thefts there, but over time they got used to me and remembered my bike).

Went in, everything was nice and fine till I pulled out my card. I was accused of being 15..on a sv650..

I didnt have my ID either, and he started getting arsey saying he wouldnt accept payment because I had no ID. Extremely awkward, I cant leave to go get my ID as he will call the cops with my number plate, and he wont let me pay. Wtf am I meant do?

Luckily after 5 mins of arguing and manager came out to see what all the commotion was about, took one look at me, one look at my bike and told the guy to stop fucking around.

Never saw that guy in there again...

I think they ask everyone... I've had it (the question, mind out of the gutter) in Morrison's and ASDA.

There was also a case my missus told me about - some 80-something guy was refused fags because he had no ID to prove his age, apparently.
