Getting a good paint finish with spray paint?

Hi,

Im wanting to paint the bike a new colour but cannot afford to get it done professionally, so was wondering how I could get a good finish using standard spray paint?
More than likely matt finish, Im not so fond of the shiney shiney anymore.

Any guides anywhere?

Matte finish is a piece of piss, its getting it shiny shiny out of a rattle can thats a pain in the arse, i painted mine with rattle cans but its far from perfect (ive attatched a pic for added whoring), just take your time prepping it, something i never did, although i painted a mates scooter matte black with monster graphics and it looked perfect.

i work with a sprayer so ive got handy at it myself.

preperation is everything

wet and dry back to metal if your doing your tank (im not going to try to give tips on useing filler if your tanks dented, its all about practice and watching good people do it.)

plastics: get some wet and dry and use the different grades to get it back to a really smooth finish

get a de greaser and get all of the grease off, a tiny bit will fuck your paint job up.

then go in the least dusty place youve got and spray, back and forth, dont go for a lot of paint in 1 coat, do several coats adding a bit at a time.

use wet and dry again to get out any imperfections.

Use liquid compund to polish it to a shine, and then actuall polish for the finish.

Ive explained it like its easy, it takes years to be really good at spraying/ pannel beating.

Cheers, been looking over various guides elsewhere also.
All the bodywork (including tank) as plastic.
There is a couple of parts that are metal that I may also be spraying.
I know a self etching primer is needed for metal parts but what about plastic?

As half lyfe says it takes ages to be real good, but if paint is ropey could make it look a whole lot better.

Preparation and Time is the key.
Slow and sure is the way to go... Wink

A caution on the 'Laquer ' front.
I did my tank once with laquer and some petrol dripped and messed it up, so maybe just paint and polish for the tank.

Sure others might know what laquer/ varnish might be petrol proof.

Just a quick question on spraying too....

The tank on my 10 is in a bit of a state, now even though its a track bike I want to do a half decent job.

The laquer is off in places and on another part the black paint it totally gone, but not down to the metal.

I would rather not rub the whole tank back and primer it, so could I just flat the whole tank with a fine wet & dry (leaving it black where there is still paint there, then blow over a few layers to bring it back up to a decent finish?

for general flatting/prep for painting we used to use P800 wet and dry 3m shiz.
400 is just going to make your already shocking spraycan jobs look even worse Laughing

Cheers fella's. Might give it a go this weekend if I have time (and its not too cold!).

I'm not bothere about it being an amazing job but I want it to look half decent. I'll probably laquer it after too but I'll post up a pick or two of the results!
