So, today on the way to work the barge was missfiring a bit, I put this down to the dense fog and general dampness of the day.
At lunch I had a quick glance over the bike and couldnt see anything wrong, it started fine and no missfiring.
On the way home it was utter shite, kept cutting out and generally being an arse. Parked up went inside and let the dog out. When I let him out the front door I could smell burning plastic, and see black smoke coming from the bike!! Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiite!!!
So after a quick blast with a CO2 extinguisher im left with this mess.

No idea whats caused it but the loom is screwed. Its like the picture in several places. Lucily I have a spare but Id still like to know what caused it. ____________________ Quietly and consistently taking the piss.

My NTV self imolated twice , one time was a petrol leak due to a badly decayed fuel hose.
The other was electrical and before I started fixing things myself, it had to be vanned home and taken to Gaz.
He said it was because the outer covering of the big fat wires had frayed from very slight rubbing for years and that the loom had been messed with (it had as it had a big fairing with side lights like you find on lorries multiple different headlamps (4 bulbs crammed into each light fittament) and wasn't put back into the holder which is molded into the airbox.
And that the heat from these wires was tiny and thus was ok for ages until a big enough strip was frayed away which caused more heat enough to start things burning.
I watched him cut out that bit of loom and re-solder in quite a lot of wires , wrap them up in heat shrink then wrap them up in tape then sheath them in a thick protective tube. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. You had a short circuit, as said already, probably from a wire rubbing through the insulation and shorting against the frame.
It would almost definately be better to buy a whole loom off a breakers than to start trying to splice bits of wire in the old one. The insulation will be damaged beyond where it looks like and two additional joins per damaged wire are just somewhere else for it to fail.
Or twist the ends together and wrap them in PVC tape then spend the rest of your life chasing intermittant electrical faults. Eventually getting so fed up that you sell it to some other poor bastard who has the same headache until he finds the bodge then replaces the loom. That's what most people do. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

A tip for next time, Re-wire the new loom in as you take the old one out, it means you can follow the routing etc Means you dont end up thinking bollocks where does this part go?
