Hi, just received an email from a friend warning me to check my licence.
Here's some excepts.

Unwitting motorists face £1,000 fines as thousands of photo card driving licences expire

Thousands of motorists are at risk of being fined up to £1000 because they are unwittingly driving without a valid licence.

They risk prosecution after failing to spot the extremely small print on their photo card licence which says it automatically expires after 10 years and has to be renewed - even though drivers are licensed to drive until the age of 70.

The fiasco has come to light a decade after the first batch of photo licences was issued in July 1998, just as the they start to expire.

To rub salt into wounds, drivers will have to a pay £17.50 to renew their card - a charge which critics have condemned as a 'stealth tax' and which will earn the Treasury an estimated £437million over 25 years.

Official DVLA figures reveal that while 16,136 expired this summer, so far only 11,566 drivers have renewed, leaving 4,570 outstanding.

With another 300,000 photo card licences due to expire over the coming year, experts fear the number of invalid licences will soar, putting thousands more drivers in breach of the law and at risk of a fine.

Mine expires in 9 yrs time, but i'll get a free renew in 18mnts time Thumbs Up

Is this new news to anyone? [edit ..did do a search..must improve technique ]

Yes we discussed this in 3 threads recently , there is a separate expiry date near your photo , you need to update your photo every 10 years with the DVLA costs £20 or there abouts.

will they add a new photo with that though?

I have already recently got a new license after the Romanian Police took my original. I figured a new photocard was cheaper than their fine so skipped the country.

I'm not so sure about this - I recently had 2 new photocards issued to me - one when I passed my bike test and another when I changed my home address - each time the license has come back with the same expiry date - mines up July this year - bummer

The danger is the DVLA mess it up and 'lose' your licence entitlements as some people have done , ie bike cops losing their bike licences due to the DVLA's incompentence, each change and send back risks this.

Probably why I keep my bike and car test certs in a safe deposit box.

Nasty.....

Seems from a look at the DVLA site that its £17.50 to update the pic and you can't do it via change of address.......

Even scam you for £17.50 if you have lost, defaced or had it stolen.....

Tight gits.. Twisted Evil

Seems like another good reason to stick to the old green paper version then Laughing

Yeah, I've had my license sent away and re-issued a couple of times lately. The expiry date will stay the same as the main reason for needing to update it is that you might not look much like your photo from 10 years ago.

Doesn't count because the picture stays the same. The renewal date on my licence and my girlfriends licence stayed the same despite moving twice since they were issued.

Mine wasn't due for renewal until next year but since I was sending my licence in to have my A entitlement added, I thought I may as well do both.

I've now got the new style photocard as opposed to the old photocard, an updated photo, an updated signature and my new entitlement added. I didn't think £17.50 was too bad for all that, but it goes up to £20.00 next month!

Good idea to keep the photo updated but to be honest this should be a free service, or perhaps a minimal charge or return postage. I would imagine it takes the DVLA virtually no effort to update these.

One thing bothers me.

Do we still need to get someone to sign the photo saying it's a true likeness?

No, if they already have a photo of you on file then you just send the new one in. It's only on your first licence that you need it signed.
