Ask on 400greybike, if you buy second hand restrictors the certificate will be specific to the bike they were bought for so you'd still have to prove to police/insurance your bike is actually restricted. I don't see why a letter from the garage you get to fit them would not suffice though, despite what FI international would have you believe there is no actual law saying their certificate is needed to prove restriction you just need the bike restricted, and something to prove it was done helps as cops can't go putting the bike on a dyno or ripping it apart easily.

What the shit? Who's paying for the bike, you or him? I'd tell him to bollocks! And why the hll would he want to ride a 33bhp vfr? (supposed to keeping it full power, or having his own bike?)

You could probably fit the restrictors yourself if you can get a set, and having "proof" doesn't matter if your actually restricted. If they want proof, let them dyno it!

thanks for the replys,
i think my dad wanting to get insured on it is just his way of making sure i keep it restricted.
my dads a prick when i comes down to things like this, took the piss persuading him that i wasnt going to have a restricted 50.

I was looking for ways where i could just alter something fast and easy that would change it from 33-60 bhp,
the only idea i came up with was putting a switch to 2 of the leads for the spark plugs, but my dad refused that idea aswell
kinda like "get it restricted or get the fock out of my house" is what i get from my dad... Oh why couldnt i have a dad who was a fucking sissy!?

Well as he is probably getting free accomodation, food, bills at home then I don't think it's unreasonable even if he has paid for the bike himself. Plus there's the chance his dad has insured him on one of the family cars so it'd only be fair.

My dad was the exact opposite to that, he said ''i hope you aint putting that overpriced restrictive piece of shit in your bike''

When i was supposed to be restricted i was riding a full power 96' thunderace.

I can see where he is coming from though, it is for your own good. Plus 33bhp will be plenty if it's your first bike. Just hope that he gets bored of it being slow as fuck and takes the restrictors out.

I wish i been paying keep since the day i was 16! Took the piss. I got myself a aprenticeship, which is pretty shit money atm but will be worth it. So that kinda pays for all my stuff, can normaly put away 400quid if im careful a month.
Well ill spose ill get it restricted then maybe in 6 months time my dad will have forgot.
Just sold my RS50 yesterday. Dont think the kid will keep it long, or he will blow it up, had 28K KM on the clock and had never had a rebuild, but did run sweet tbh, i just looked after it with painstakingly long periods to warm the bike up ect.

man, for what its worth just restrict it ureself, its a dammmm site cheaper than getting a garage to do it, and its keeps your dad happy. and another thing is, all the time you are riding on your restricted licence on an unrestricted bike, your insurance is void, so if you come off it, someone hits you, or someone steals your bike, or sets it on fire or you run some one over, or total your bike, none of this is going to be covered, you may aswell be chucking money down the toilet or ride around with no insurance, and you never know whats going to be a round the corner on a quick ride. so for what its worth mate, get it restricted, keeps ure old man happy, save yourself alot of agro, take your time and learn your road craft first. theres no point going balls out the bag on a tuono for example if you have no understanding of what it takes to SURVIVE on our roads. worth bearing in mind. safe riding. Thumbs Up

Man, he isn't joining the ruffnecks, surviving on the roads pssh. Just be sensible about it. Theres no point in telling someone what to do, just make them aware. He seems like a relativley switched on guy, (well he's been working for 2 years that kickstarts people to grow up) he will undoubtedly know the risks of riding unrestricted and realise that everyone is blind.

To OP, I'd personally just restrict it (by making the washers yourself or if you need it pm me, theres a guy I know who makes the discs for about 25 quid posted) don't crash it or lose your license, then see if your dad will approve of you taking it out after a reasonable time. If not then fair enough, it is the law.

Doesn't work like that.

Think about it, you don't get equal power the entire way through the rev range, you get the most about 8-14k on a vfr400 IIRC, so if you cut it off at halfway, you might only be getting 20bhp.

Needs to be done on a dyno

I would say fuck it to him. If he is gonna be a knob like that and you have bought your own bike etc, do what you want.

Tell him he's not going to be on insurance, and you are not going to restrict it. If he tells you to fuck, off, well go.

Rolling Eyes No need to keep wittering on about the point we are all very aware of. if you get caught, your fucked. End of. Don't get caught is the simple answer. if you do, just accept your screwed.

Its a risk I'm aware of, but it's a risk i take. Just as you take a risk in generaly riding as bike, just as you risk your licence when you "open it up a bit".

what does your dad ride/has rode? will he be able to tell the difference between 33 and 60? if he hasnt rode for a while perhaps any bike will feel fast to him, if hes use to a litre bike the 400 will feel slow anyway so he may just believe you.

so in that case, order on of these.

Quite possibly going to need a lot less than half throttle to get it down to 33hp.

For a start with CV carbs the relationship between the intake area and throttle position is far from linear.

All the best

thanks for the reply's
Decided im going to restrict it and see how i feel with 33bhp, Im not going to ride it until iv gotten it restricted cuz i know i feel be disappointed if i ride it before hand.
Was 17 yesterday! Very Happy and passed my theory test piece of piss, so now im gna book 1-2 days training and get my practice done asap.

One thing my dad was moaning about was he talked to 1 of his band members whos a mech at a bike dealership and he was chatting shit how it MUST be restricted by a dealership using FI.. told my dad it was complete BS.
A nice chap in Ireland is sending me a set of washers for the bike so i will fit them myself Very Happy
Is it worth having a Dyno on it once the kit is fitted just to make sure and use it as evidence to my insurance company?

PS whats the cost of a Dyno these days? Because if its exspensive then it could be just worth paying the 190quid to get it done "officially".
Also who actually has access to this FI international master database?
I talk about my dad WAY too much, he has too much influence on my life Mad
oh well 2 years time ill have finished my apprenticeship and be on 30k+ a year so he will see the rear of my arse soon enough Thumbs Up

had an accident on my nsr 2 years ago before id passed my test. bike was race tuned to like 34bhp, had race stuff all over it. AND my cbt had expired 3 days before my accident and i didnt even know! lucky thing i got off with it all and received the compo i rightly deserved, serves this guy right for shouting for help from allah when he hit me. the guy tried to curse me...? what the hell is all that about..? hmmm weirdo.

yeah restrict tho pal, i did (i only needed to for like 4 month b4 i done direct access) i did get pulled once and told to prove it was restricted, i hads to prove a dyno readout which i then claimed back the money for! WAXA!

Hi, dyno run is normally about £20, there or there abouts. I'd probably say get it done for your own piece of mind.
