NHS exploiting sick people , tax on illness?

My rant , SOB's exploiting ill people with a 0845 number , how sick is that? , a tax on being ill now....

An 0845 number is a local call rate number, the same price as calling someone on a landline with the same dialling code, except for the fact that it may not be in your inclusive minutes. I'm sure that if you are ill you can cope with the 4p/min peak and 1p/min off-peak call charges.

Describing it as a tax on being ill is rediculous. Sounds like a headline from the Sun, which isn't a good thing!

0845 numbers are local rate (or lo-call rate). When they first came out this was a great idea. Because they were used by companies with high call volumes, they guaranteed a large number of calls and therefore the people with the numbers were rewarded a tiny amount of money per call.

Many GP surgeries used this to have new phone systems put in to give better service to patients. These systems are often leased or managed systems - the income from the phone calls pays for the system.

Unfortunately things have changed with phone networks and many phone providers don't include 0845 numbers in inclusive minutes. GPs often remain tied into contracts for managed systems with the 0845 number, or removal of an 0845 number may result in removal of a leased telephone system. Do you want to go back to a system where your GP just has one phone line which is always engaged?

I found just calling round in person gets a good response.
Also not being ill in the first place. If it wasn't for these bloody ill people the NHS would run just fine.

The fact 0845 isnt included in most inclusive local/national call packages, means that most people will pay extra at the end of the month as a result of ringing 0845 numbers.

You can't justify it just cos you are ill, if anything I am even less tolerant to being ripped off when you are ill, because you already feel vunerable and hard done by.

Ok maybe its only 4p/min but its still unacceptable, particularly for a publicly funded institution.
