hi, i just recently my battery ran out COMPLETELY (it was a pretty old battery)...
when it didnt start i thought it was because i hadnt used it for about a month... so i roll started it a couple of times...
after a roll start, while riding on the road, it died... and there was burnt plastic smell...

i replaced the battery and also the plastic connector thing to the rectifier (which had melted)...
and now its working fine!!!
i read somewhere in another forum to check your battery often.
i got a multimeter and checked the voltage.
when the bike's off it approx 12.5V but when i turn it on.. revs up to around 3000.. it goes all the way to 16 - 17V ...
should that be happening???
i dont want to have the battery die on me again...

ps. ive been riding for less than a year... Very Happy

IIRC normal level should be 13-14 volts, sounds like your regulator or rectifier may be knackered.

Hi

Sounds like it is the regulator part of the regulator / rectifier that has gone (not that you can replace them seperatly on most bikes).

Don't think they are expensive for FZRs (~£50 from https://www.electrexworld.co.uk/ for an FZR600).

the high voltage (which probably went far higher at speed) probably melted the connector and wrecked the battery. It also stands a fair change of wrecking the cdi unit or any other electronic unit (eg, control unit for heated grips) so don't ride it until fixed.

All the best

Keith

The regulator rectifier went on my FZR600 when I had it. I've read that its quite a common fault.

I was able to replace it with one from a Yamaha R6 from a guide on-line. The R6 regulator rectifier cost about £10 from ebay and its deemed to be better than the FZR as it has a larger heat sink.

I'll have a look for the link later, I think it was from FZR Archives.

Do not use the bike until you fix it as you will boil the battery and need a new one.

Maybe, just have to stick on a new regulator / rectifier and then see how the battery is coping.

All the best

Sorry.. but again i was just wondering if i could use a R/R from any bike.. different makes as well...
eg. Suzuki GSXR 600 ... its got 4 pins too..
so id only have to drill the plate to stick it on!!!

Would the electrical side of things be the same!??
im thinking it would be... But then again.. im not 100% sure...

Thanks!!!!!!!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but can you recommend a multi meter? I think a high voltage ruined the cdi on my previous bike, expensive job so worth getting everything right.

ive just borrowed one from a friend, he doesn't know what brand it is, doesnt look like its branded... But im guessing if you're buying one, dont buy the cheap stuff... Go up in price a little and get at least the middle range ones... ~ $30 - $40...
u get wot u pay for.... =S

the gsxr 600 has a different rectifier
the gsx 600 has the same as a fzr 750 but not the same as the fzr 600

Hi

Firstly the regulator rectifiers are often interchangable, sometimes with some minor wiring changes required, but there are a couple of different varieties.

The one on my FZR600 was the same as the one on my TZR250 (indeed, took off one to sort the other).

As to multimeters, for most basic uses it doesn't matter too much. Analogue ones can be useful to see a change (such as a pulse in voltage) but this is probably not essential to most people and they are a lot more expensive. Digital ones vary greatly in price. I have 1 decent one I don't use that often and a couple of cheap ones (the cheap ones were £5 for 2 from Maplins) that do 90% of what is required.

All the best

Keith
