Help with speeding up the healing process (wisdom tooth)

Does anyone have any tips for speeding up the healing process after having a wisdom tooth removed please?

I had my lower right one removed last Monday and naturally i am still getting very bad jaw ache. The stitches are still in (they're dissolvable) and i'm not sure whether the pain is coming from the stitches pulling on my mouth or the gaping hole where my tooth was. Either way the pain resonates through the right side of my jaw/ face, and i liken it to the cramp you get in your calf! So you can probably understand why i'm keen for it to heal as soon as possible!

I know someone will have been through the same, seeing as wisdom teeth are such a pain in the bum!

Could try Anbesol, it's a local anesthetic. I used to use it when my wisdom teeth were forcing my jaw apart, and later when I needed root canal.

[edit] Just looked it up, it contains Benzocaine, so you could just chew on a Durex Performa

I was using Orajel (normal strength and extra strength) in the lead up to it being removed, because that contains Benzocaine too. I've got loads left but i wasn't sure if i should use it seeing as my gum is all exposed and nasty. Would i be ok using it do you think?

I'd try to avoid putting it in the hole, rather see if applying it low down on the gum has any effect. I'd be more worried that any probing/rubbing in the area will hasten the stiches dissolving.

I found after my root canal that the bigger pain was from my jaw being clamped open for an hour, rather than the actual root work.

When my mother had all her teeth out, she was advised to rinse with warm salt water to speed up the recovery - you might want to give that a try, so that the area is kept clean.

I also found that I was getting crankier as the pain was keeping me awake; dosing up with cocodamol helped alot with that.

Tatters, have they all impacted or something? Let us know how you get on when you've had them out. I can't imagine having 4 out in one go!

And make sure they do give you a general. They said mine would be done like that and changed their mind on the day. They gave me 3 dirty great injections instead. Never want that again!

One is upside down and the other three are at a 90 degree angles facing forwards, was going to have only one removed as it was starting to rot from trapped food but when l had the x-rays at hospital they wanted to take all of them out.


No way l,m having them taken out while awake could,nt image having teeth pulled , had two pre canine teeth pulled under a general a few years ago.

warm saltwater...gentle rinsing..as often as you you stand it.
Its natural,quick and should of been recommended on your post op factsheet thing.

Hey, as you are probably aware these things do take a bit more time to heal than normal extractions. From what you are saying it sounds very much like the pain you are getting is mainly from your jaw muscles having been held open for a length of time? If this is the case (there is no throbbing pain from the socket its self, and no bad taste in your mouth) then my advice would be just to take some painkillers (Ibuprofen probably 400-600mg if you can take them) and try and sit it out. There's really nothing you can do to quicken the process, mainly because there's no infection, just a slight bruising of your jaw muscles however the Ibuprofen has a slight Anti-Inflammatory action which could help things along a wee bit.

To be honest, I wouldn't go poking around the surgical site with anything foreign or putting any anaesthetic pastes there if you don't need to - the chemicals in some of these things can dry out the mucosa pretty well and actually hamper healing to a degree so best just to stick to the Hot Salt Mouthwashes.
