I didn't think much of Long Way Round, the series. The book was a lot better and had many themes the series neglected (i.e. the camera man being a better rider than Ewan and Charly!). But I got the feeling from the series, that the bikes were almost incidental to it all. It was like, "we travelled 1000 miles in the rain this morning and here we are eating testicles!". Cue ten minute of testicle eating, meeting with the natives, etc. Yawn. Testicle eating is ten a penny with travel documentaries - they all do it. Nothing about the 1000 mile trip!

LWR was more like any old travel programme and the biking seemed to be at the margin. The only episode that stood out was the trip through Mongolia.

But Long Way Down, which I'm watching now, is far better. There's more biking action in a single eisode than the whole series of LWR!
Great stuff, actually. I'd recommend it!

You only just seen it? I thought the second one was terrible until I watched it a second time. Seen them both a few times now.

Race to Dakar is better.

I think you're completely wrong. The good thing about LWR Is that it doesn't dwell on the bikes. The experience is the key along with the humanity. The fact that they got help from random strangers on the way was nice. I liked the suspense of the equipment they need and what they nearly can't get until the last minute (whether or not you believe it was staged or whatever). it was interesting.

LWD on the other hand was one long series of Ewan whinging about having to ride a lot and not experience the countries until the final episode where he says that he wishes the trip was longer!!! Not only that, you knew that they were going to be given cars, bikes, equipment, etc and you knew it was going to work. It was dull.

LWR = good

LWD = rubbish.

No they aren't. They are getting sales from people who want the bikes for their dynamic abilities, not because Ewan and Charley rode one.

no question about it, ktm are kicking themselves, and the russian 'expert' who said they were idiots and wouldnt make it

to be fair they are idiots so the russian guy had a point, but they did do it, and more importantly make entertaining tv out of it that is now selling shit loads of motorbikes

not cheap ones either

Tbh i watched the first one and it wasn't what i expected,i expected 2 guys,2 bikes and obviously limited equipment(because they were on bikes).Give me a BMW,2 support vehicles,a medical team, every snap-on tool i'd ever need and all the other perks that came with it and i'd ride around the world, for free!

Also out of curiosity what would you rather do it on,a KTM or the BMW.Personally i wouldn't have much faith in the KTM getting me around the world

Re Race to Dakar. I found it interesting seeing what actually goes on compared to what you used to see on Eurosport. It got extra extra interesting when Charlie broke both his wanking arms and it was forced to concentrate on the two other riders. Much better programme from that point onward.

I've got them all on DVD.

Race to Dakar is the best by far, followed by LWR and then LWD.

I enjoyed LWR more as its more about two mates having fun. I just felt with LWD that it wasn't about that any more and it felt rushed. With LWR there was a very distinct difference with the landscape as they travelled and you could see the changes between the countries.

I loved Long Way Down and Long Way Round the TV series. Can't say the same about the books, though. I read the Long Way Down book first, which I really enjoyed. After I'd read it I picked up the special edition illustrated Long Way Round book for cheap and I thought it a bit bland, and it only took me about 2 days to read (I'm quite a slow reader).

However, between reading LWD and LWR I read By Any Means, snippets from quite a few travel books in the Adventure Motorcycle Handbook, Jupiter's Travels and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which I think are all 'cleverer' books than Ewan and Charley's original offerings.

Preferred the book of the first one, but would watch again...not watched the second one all the way through yet. They may be a little bit staged and a little bit wrapped in cotton wool, but at least they are out there doing something remotely interesting, AND it's a lot better viewing than the rest of the drivel on the tv these days.

LWR was quite entertaining.

LWD was very poor as it was to focused on EM....

When i heard that they were doing LWD, i thought great...

Start in the artic circle and make it all the way down to South Africa. With next to no non biking bits..... Some fantastic countries all the way.

Instead what do we get Scotland to Africa.....

They are now about to start on Long Way Up, starting in Australia and heading up through Asia.

Now is it just me or has anyone elses opinion of EW changed. i used to think he was great and CB was just tagging along. Now i think EM is a tit and CB has bought so much more to the viewing public.

Also CB doesn't neglect has fans he is at all the book signings, bike shows he's invited to, and has bought alot of attention towards unicef. I can't see what EM is doing.

I guess Ewan doesn't have to bother.

Agree with you, I thought Charley was a bit hot-headed to start with, one instance that comes to mind is the carnet stamping palava/argument with Russ on LWR (reminded me of myself Laughing).

I'll admit it was entertaining at the time but it got my back up right at the end. EM (twat no. 1) sat in New York, pleased as punch with himself for what he had done. Im sure the support crew and doctor that had travelled along in the 4x4's (one of which the ungrateful shits managed to wreck) also had the same sentiment. The £ks and £ks of tools and equipment safely packed up along with his free bike and gear. Contemplating his fantastic book deal and the forthcoming dvd sales. What does twat no. 1 have the sheer face to say? 'I hope this encourages more people to do this'

I could have eaten the fucking television and shit it down his smarmy neck for that single comment alone. Id have to sell everything I own and give up my job before I even contemplated it, perhaps becoming famous would help me worm my way into random strangers good books also.

As for KTM thinking they wouldnt make it across the last bit of Russia? Which part of chucking a bike on the back of a massive truck is 'making it'? Surely the KTM would have just as much chance sat atop the truck. Fair play to them for ignoring the moaning primadonas begging for a free bike.

As for sales, I see nothing in BMW that I didnt see before the show. I still have respect for them but absolutely no interest whatsoever, in fact seeing twat no 1 and twat no. 2 (BOREman) clones carrying out the long 12 mile treck to work on the BMW's with full paniers has made me want one of them even less.

Im cutting myself short because I could go on and on about how mad the whole concept makes me. Millionaires getting free gear ffs, bury him with Bono and have done with it. Thumbs Down

Of course, just as the rest of us I spend most of the month working 6.30 to 3.30 and not really having a pot to piss in most of the time. Im not exactly rolling in it already.

My point being I would have some sort of gratuity and humbleness about the whole thing. I would probably cry like a girl at the whole idea of someone lavishing the opportunity on me. I wouldnt be throwing a hissy fit if someone had the nerve to doubt me (correctly I might add) and not give me a bike for free. I then wouldnt proceed to smugly look down on others and say something like 'I hope this encourages you to do it too, I mean after all i did it so can you'. Very patronising I thought.
