Sump Funked!?

i decided i would change my oil today.. and also over-tighten my sump plug and leave my bike dripping oil I'm not sure whether i've shredded the thread on the sump.. or both.. but i'm ordering a new plug and washer.. i'll try the new washer without touching the sump first.. is there any non-permenant thread locking paste or anything i can use that will improve the seal and alos withstand the heat etc?

If i have dammaged the thread in the sump, would a helicoil insert do the job or would it just be easier to buy a whole new sump for it? Thanks, Tom.

Yes a helicoil would work just fine. I have done a couple. If not, then tapping a size larger and using a larger plug would also work well.

I generally find that its not the plug that gets damaged, the sump is softer. As a temporary fix you could try a rubber washer to help give a better seal.

Might be worth running a tap through the thread before you fit the new plug.

Try a bit of PTFE tape around the threads on the sump plug, but a visual inspection should tell you whether either of the threads are knackered on the sump or the plug. Whatever you do though, don't bodge it, as a failure could easily lead to either a knackered engine or a big accident due to the oil getting under your rear tyre.
